Did This Elephant Actually Eat This Poor Tourist's iPhone?

Did This Elephant Actually Eat This Poor Tourist's iPhone? Imagine you're out sight-seeing in Thailand. Whoa! Elephants! Better catch some video with your iPhone. Really hold it out there for a good shot when, haha, he's touching it with his trunk! Aaaand it's gone. Sure, it'd be equal parts hilarious and a bummer if it actually happened, and while that's what this video shows, it's probably (unfortunately) bogus.

I don't know much about biology, but it seems to me that an iPhone would have to have some kind of rocket thrusters or something to race through a digestive system that fast. And beside that, this just seems to good to be true, especially the part where she fishes the filthy thing out of a pile of dung. Veracity aside, it's an amusing little skit, even if the camera work could probably be a little bit better.

So what do you think? Is there anyone out there willing to make an argument for this thing as real? Do you know something about elephant digestion I don't? Am I just hoping in vain? [Ubergizmo via DVICE]

UCONN MEN'S BASKETBALL: Huskies top Washington to wrap up non-conference play

HARTFORD ? It wasn?t exactly a $6,917,500 performance, but a win is a win. And the UConn men?s basketball team finishes non-conference play and heads into the Big East at 10-2.

On a night when coach Kevin Ollie signed a five-year extension worth just south of $7 million, UConn was a tad shaky Saturday at the XL Center. Fortunately for UConn, its fellow Huskies from the University of Washington were even shakier, and UConn emerged with a 61-53 victory for the 6,600 or so snowstorm-braving fans.

?It was a good day in my life,? a beaming Ollie said afterwards.

Omar Calhoun scored 14 points, Shabazz Napier added 13 points and eight rebounds (and seven turnovers) and Ryan Boatright netted 12 to lead the East Coast Huskies. Enosch Wolf, coming off the bench for the first time in four games, hauled down a team-high nine rebounds as UConn won the rebounding battle (40-36) for just the second time in 12 games this season.

?That was a real physical game, especially on the rebounds,? said Wolf, the 7-foot-1 center. ?Coming in and fixing our biggest problem in this game, I feel really good.?

Ollie and athletic director Warde Manuel informed the team at its shootaround this afternoon about the coach?s contract extension.

?We were heading into tonight with a positive mindset,? said Calhoun. ?It definitely feels good. Coach Ollie?s a great guy, he wishes the best for everybody. He?s the guy who recruited me here. Everybody was happy for him.?

Added Wolf: ?We work so hard for him to get that contract. We all know he deserved it. They should have given it to him right away, we all know that. So now we?ve got to prove it that he?s the right guy. We?ve got to go even harder and can?t let down.?

As he walked from the locker room to the bench a few minutes before the opening tip-off, Ollie received a standing ovation from the crowd.

?My legs were shaking and everything,? he said. ?It was like the first game I stepped into the XL Center. I was excited for the moment. I just never thought it could happen for a guy out of South Central Los Angeles. But I?m an unrealistic thinker, just like Coach Calhoun.? Continued...

After an entertaining first 10 minutes or so, both teams got sloppy and struggled shooting for most of the rest of the game. UConn didn?t score a field goal the final 9? minutes of the opening half but still had a 31-26 edge at the break.

UConn upped its advantage to as much as 14 (44-30) after Calhoun?s alley-oop layup from R.J. Evans early in the latter half. But Washington would close to within four inside the final nine minutes.

However, Napier hit a rainbow jumper, and after a Washington free throw, UConn went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by Enosch Wolf?s press-breaking, alley-oop dunk from Calhoun.

?When I went up, I didn?t think I was going to get it, but I caught it,? said Wolf. ?I was happy he threw it, so I finally could get one.?

Washington fell to 8-5. C.J. Wilcox, who entered the game averaging nearly 20 per game, was held to five points on 2-for-12 shooting. Napier guarded him for most of the contest.

UConn begins its Big East slate on New Year?s Day at Marquette.

?I?m happy with 10-2, but I?m not satisfied,? said Ollie. ?Those are two different words. I think we can give a lot more, and I?m going to push the guys and will them to give them a lot more. They?ve been doing it.?

RIM RATTLINGS

?DeAndre Daniels (nine points) left the game in the waning minutes after banging his chin on the floor. He?ll need some stitches, but Ollie hopes he?ll be ready to go against Marquette.

?UConn has now won 13 straight games over Pac 10/12 teams, dating back to its NCAA tourney loss to UCLA in 1995. Continued...

?There were 12,720 tickets sold for the game, though only about half of that showed up due to the snowstorm.

Said Ollie: ?I know there?s a foot of snow out there, and for them to come out and support us like they did, it?s exceptional. It?s outstanding. They?re wonderful people that I love.?

Rare California tornado damages greenhouses in Monterey Bay

? National Weather Service
Damage from Saturday's tornado in Watsonville is seen.

One of only 7 tornadoes to hit Bay Area counties over the last decade

A small tornado in Santa Cruz County near Watsonville last Saturday lasted only three minutes but knocked down walls of some greenhouses
and uprooted trees in its path, a spokesman for the National Weather Service
said.

The tornado started as a waterspout on the surface of Monterey Bay at 6:59 a.m., crossed over Sunset State Beach and grew to 20 yards wide with winds reaching 75 mph as it swept east to inland areas, said Logan Johnson, a weather service spokesman in Monterey.

The swirling winds crossed over a large farm, sent fiberglass and plastic sheeting flying off of the walls of some greenhouses and caused the metal support structure of one to cave in and damage crops growing inside, Johnson said.

The twister also blew out fiberglass windows in two other greenhouses and propelled debris into a field 30 to 50 yards from the greenhouses, Johnson said.

The wind sent agricultural cloth in the air, wrapping it around a utility pole, and uprooted several trees on San Andreas Road before ending at
7:02 a.m. just over a mile from where the tornado started, Johnson said.

The tornado, which took place about a mile south of the private Monterey Bay Academy Airport, came from the major storm front that hit the Bay Area last weekend, Johnson said.

The 20-yard width of the whirlwind was "pretty small," Johnson said. "The largest and strongest tornados can be one quarter to a half mile wide."

Tornadoes in the San Francisco Bay Area are fairly rare, but not without precedent, the most recent one occurring up north in Santa Rosa in Sonoma County in March 2011, Johnson said.

The weather service has recorded seven tornadoes in Bay Area counties over the last decade, Johnson said.

Kitayama Brothers Watsonville, at 481 San Andreas Road, the farm in the tornado's path, grows flowers in its greenhouses, including snapdragons, gerbera daisies and hydrangeas, according to Carolyn Do, branch manager of the firm's San Jose office.

Obama invites congressional leaders to cliff talk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A deadline looming, President Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday in search of a compromise to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" of across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts.

The development capped a day of growing urgency in which Obama returned early from a Hawaiian vacation while lawmakers snarled across a partisan divide over responsibility for gridlock on key pocketbook issues. Speaker John Boehner called the House back into session for a highly unusual Sunday evening session.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2 per gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

Four days before the deadline, the White House disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts.

Administration officials confirmed the Friday meeting at the White House in a bare-bones announcement that said the president would "host a meeting."

An aide to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the Kentucky lawmaker "is eager to hear from the president."

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner issued a statement that said the Ohio Republican would attend and "continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act."

While there was no guarantee of a compromise, Republicans and Democrats said privately elements of any agreement would likely include an extension of middle class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes as well as cancellation of the scheduled spending cuts. An extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring could also become part of a year-end bill, they said.

That would postpone politically contentious disputes over spending cuts for 2013.

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. Yet there was no legislation pending and no sign of negotiations in either the House or the Senate on a bill to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang, and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening. Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the House could be in session until Jan. 2, the day before the new congress is sworn in.

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

German finance minister says worst of euro debt crisis over

First Published Dec 27 2012 09:44 am ? Last Updated Dec 27 2012 09:44 am

Berlin ? Germany?s finance minister says the worst of euro area?s debt crisis appears to be over after three years of worries over Greece and other members of the group of 17 European Union countries that use the single currency.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted Thursday as telling the Bild newspaper: "I think we have the worst behind us."

Schaeuble says Greece and others have recognized that they can only overcome the crisis by implementing reforms and that the Greek government ? which has received two bailouts ? "knows that it cannot financially overburden the other euro states".

Some in Germany have expressed concern about the economy of neighboring France. But Schaeuble says the government there "knows very well that every country must constantly conduct reforms to remain competitive."

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise rates about 4.5 percent in February

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise prices about 45 percent in February

DirecTV announced today that it will raise its prices effected February 7, 2013, with the average customer's bill going up about 4.5 percent. The card shown above displays the new rates (hit the source link to see them all) which it claims are up less than cable competitor's price hikes, and are pushed by programming costs that have gone up eight percent. The last time we noted an increase in prices, DirecTV had just added a slew of HD channels. This time, it comes after a year that's seen a number of DVR upgrades, more new channels, a lower price for Sunday Ticket, the launch DirecTV Everywhere features and, of course, a battle over programming costs with Viacom. We predicted that last bit would be reflected sooner or later in a pricing adjustment and it appears the time has come. So tell us DirecTV customers, are the new features, and keeping all those channels worth an increase to you, or are you thinking of moving on?

Smart Magazine | Earthy and Expecting: Remembering to celebrate

If you?ve been following my column (thank you!), you know that the ?expecting? part of ?Earthy and Expecting? is deceiving.

You also know that my own pregnancy journey took a very unexpected twist on October 25, when I was hospitalized for contractions and put on bed rest that lasted all of four days before I delivered my son nearly three months early.

Since then, nothing in our lives ? mine and Jon?s, Jackson?s father ? has gone as ?expected.? What once was intended to be a quirky column on a New Age-style pregnancy, with an emphasis on alternative and green living, morphed into a NICU stay?s timeline alongside my personal experience of getting to know Jax, or as we call him, Superpreemie.

Talk about ?alternative.?

And ?earthy?? Try ?down to earth.?

The heady experience of realizing you?ve created a life with the person you love most in the world comes crashing into a reality you didn?t choose when you give birth early and even your doctors don?t know why, or what will happen next. It does so again when you first attempt to negotiate between your responsibility for this tiny life and the fact that the NICU staff are his primary caretakers, and again when you take your first steps toward incorporating a new being into your family and world.

This holiday, I took a break from dashing back and forth between the NICU, work and home to remember myself, who I am, and who comprises my family.

It started when my company surprised me with a baby shower that I thought was just a standard-issue holiday potluck.

Unexpected? You bet. At the ?SURPRISE!? and applause, I actually turned around to make sure no one was behind me, that I didn?t sneak in ahead of the ?real? guest of honor. Then I saw my name on a sheet cake and remembered: Oh yeah, I had a baby!

Not that I?d actually forgotten about Superpreemie. But I?ve been so wrapped up in Jax?s treatment and weight gain and progress, plus just getting my clothes to match and not totally messing up at work, that a party was the last thing on my mind; I brought a batch of Jon?s mom?s Christmas cookies to the ?potluck? and was just happy for a quick, free, hot lunch.

What I got was a reminder to celebrate. I can?t express how invaluable a gift that is ? and believe that, because I also got a money tree, to which everyone contributed in lieu of the usual Secret Santa tradition.

Jon and I had been so busy that we hadn?t even gotten a Christmas tree, so my coworkers urged me to take home the artificial tree, thick with bills and a homemade newspaper-chain strand of ?garland.?

Thanks to Erin McCracken for the gift of this ornament, and for coordinating my YDR surprise baby shower!

The lesson is, while I?ve waxed poetic about ?choosing blessed,? gone to my family-sponsored baby shower, kept near-daily updates on Jax?s progress via his CaringBridge site, shared baby pictures and enthused about his absurdly impressive weight gain, I haven?t actually celebrated.

Jon and I were so touched by the surprise shower and my coworkers? generosity that we dug out last year?s Christmas ornaments, and even went out to purchase a new one together, as is our yearly tradition. We decorated our little tree, took some time to purchase and wrap presents and write cards for those who?ve been so good to us. We threw some snowballs on Christmas Eve. I even baked a little!

Clockwise from left are Kim Moore (Mom-Mom), Delbert Moore (Papaw), Jonathan Moore (Dad), me, and Baby Jax, Superpreemie.

?

And on Christmas Day, we went to the NICU to see Superpreemie, all snuggled up in red-and-white-striped footie pajamas with a reindeer on the tush, and a red and green elf hat. Jon?s parents were with us, and we asked Jax?s nurse to take a family picture. My parents, three hours away and not going anywhere because of the weather forecast, will be in that picture next year.

I was a little sad leaving the NICU, leaving my baby behind on Christmas. He?s my family now, and so is everyone who supports us and celebrates him.

Looking ahead to 2013 ? the year Jax will come home with us, the year we?ll celebrate our first Christmas with him in our house, how can it not be a happy new year?

How can we not celebrate?

PS?Check out this story by coworker Stephanie Reighart about another NICU family Christmas. Baby Callan and Baby Jax were neighbors for a bit!

Telescope-toting balloon lifts off from Antarctica

A giant helium balloon is slowly drifting above Antarctica, about 22 miles (36 kilometers) up. Launched on Tuesday from the National Science Foundation's Long Duration Balloon facility on Earth's southernmost continent, it carries a sensitive telescope that measures submillimeter light waves from stellar nurseries in our Milky Way.

"Christmas launch!" officials with NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, which oversees the agency's balloon research program, wrote in a Twitter update on Tuesday. "BLAST launched today from McMurdo Station, Antarctica."

This is the fifth and final mission for BLAST, short for the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope, and mission designers hope it will reveal why so few stars are born in our galaxy.

On Dec. 12, BLAST was still in one of the two giant Payload Assembly Buildings at the Long Duration Balloon facility, a short distance from the U.S. research center McMurdo Station. Principal investigator Mark Devlin of the University of Pennsylvania and a group of graduate students were mounting a giant sunshade on the telescope, to ensure that the ultra-cold detectors won't heat up during the flight.

"The detectors are cooled to 0.3 degrees above absolute zero, using liquid helium," said Devlin. "If they were any warmer, they wouldn't be able to register the faint submillimeter radiation of cold interstellar dust clouds at just 30 degrees above absolute zero."

Star mystery
After test flights in 2003 in New Mexico and in 2005 in Sweden, BLAST's third flight, in 2006 from Antarctica, was a "mind-boggling" success, Devlin said. The instrument revealed beyond doubt that in the most distant galaxies, new stars were being born at a prolific rate. By measuring the star formation rate in galaxies more than 7 billion light-years away, the researchers determined that over half of the stars in the universe were born within the first 5 billion years after the Big Bang.

"But there's an unsolved problem," added co-principal investigator Barth Netterfield of the University of Toronto, who was assisting the BLAST team with the launch preparations. "BLAST found lots of so-called dark cores in our own Milky Way ? dense clouds of cold dust that are supposed to be stars-in-the-making. Based on the number of dark cores, you would expect our galaxy to spawn dozens of new stars each year on average. Yet, the galactic star formation rate is only some four solar masses per year."

So why is the stellar birth rate in our Milky Way so low? Astronomers can think of two ways in which a dense cloud of dust is prevented from further contracting into a star: turbulence in the dust, or the collapse-impeding effects of magnetic fields. On its new mission, BLAST should find out which process is to blame. [Images: Life at Antarctica's Concordia Station]

The idea is straightforward: Magnetic fields tend to bring electrically charged, elongated dust particles into alignment. If dust particles have a preferred orientation, they will slightly polarize the submillimeter radiation from the cloud. Using polarimeters, BLAST can detect if the radiation is indeed polarized, and if it is, determine the direction of the magnetic field. "If there's no polarization present," said Netterfield, "turbulence must be the reason" why so few dark cores collapse into new stars.

Final mission?
In 2010, on its fourth mission, BLAST was already equipped with polarimeters. However, according to Devlin, "that flight did not do so well because of a melted filter. We have some data, but we know we can do better."

Luckily, repeating a balloon-borne experiment is much easier and much cheaper than re-launching a scientific satellite. After each flight, most of the payload is recovered and can be used again. The BLAST camera has been recovered every single time.

BLAST's fifth flight will probably last between 12 and 14 days. While Devlin, Netterfield and their colleagues are celebrating Christmas and New Year's Eve, the 4,000-pound (1,800-kilogram) stratospheric telescope will observe selected star-forming regions in the constellations Vela and Lupus.

And if senior graduate student Tristan Matthews of Northwestern University Illinois has his way, this may not be BLAST's final mission after all. Depending on the results and the recovery success of the current flight, Matthews hopes to fly BLAST in its present configuration for a sixth time, in the Arctic. "That would give us access to a well-studied and nearby star-forming region in Taurus," he said.

Meanwhile, Devlin has received a $5 million grant from NASA over a period of five years to develop a larger version of BLAST, with a 2.5-meter mirror, compared with the current 1.8-meter aperture. That would vastly increase the number of stellar nurseries that could be studied. "We could fly SuperBLAST in 2016 or so," he said.

December 31st will mark the end of one of the biggest names in the world of printed news. As noted back in October, however, Newsweek isn't saying die, it's just jumping head first into the warm embrace of digital media. And as the publication revealed via its Twitter account, it will be doing so with a wink and a nod, thanks to a giant #lastprintissue hashtag smack dab in the middle of a classy black and white cover. #godspeed, Newsweek, #godspeed.

(AP) ? It's all right there for Adrian Peterson now.

One more game in his remarkable comeback season, and the only thing that remains on the line is everything.

A win against the rival Green Bay Packers on Sunday would put his Minnesota Vikings into the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season. The milestones of 2,000 yards and Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record are there to be had as well, along with a potential MVP award that would cement his standing among the league's great players.

"It's such a big game when you look at everything that can be accomplished," Peterson said Wednesday. "I'm looking forward to it, man. Most importantly, getting into the playoffs, securing that with a win against Green Bay. Having an opportunity to hit 2,000, having an opportunity to break Eric Dickerson's record in the same game, it would be great to accomplish."

Perhaps the only thing more improbable than the Vikings (9-6) sitting one victory away from a playoff berth is that they have been carried there by Peterson, who tore two ligaments in his left knee just over a year ago. He has already racked up a career-high 1,898 yards rushing this season, leaving him 102 away from becoming the first player to hit 2,000 yards on a reconstructed knee.

His inspiring recovery has galvanized a team that has been teetering on the edge of elimination the last four weeks and has put some of the biggest names to play the position in his corner as he runs toward history. Dickerson is on record as saying he hopes Peterson falls a little shy of his 2,105 yards rushing in 1984, but everyone from Jim Brown to Terrell Davis to Chris Johnson ? the last running back to rush for 2,000 yards ? have come out in support of his pursuit.

"So impressed by everything (at)AdrianPeterson has done this year," Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders tweeted recently. "Big fan of E.D. But really pulling for AP to break the record. Good luck."

Peterson needs 208 yards on Sunday to break Dickerson's record, a number that would be considered close to impossible for most running backs in this pass-happy league. But Peterson has topped that twice in the previous four games. He's also rushed for more yards against the Packers than any other team, including 210 yards at Lambeau Field on Dec. 2.

"I wouldn't say I'm rooting for him to get it, but I want him to do the best that he can do," said Johnson, who developed a bit of a rivalry with Peterson a few years back when both laid claim to the title of the best running back in the league. "It's just a nice story from where he got hurt last year. I sent him a text to see how he was doing and stuff like that. I wish him the best and whatever he does, I congratulate him on it and I'll be happy for him."

Peterson has been humbled by all the support and is understanding of Dickerson's stance, but there is one player he wishes he could sit down with before he plays one of the biggest games of his career ? Walter Payton.

"What inspired you to be the best?" he wishes he could ask the Bears great, who died in 1999. "How did he deal with success and fame? If he could do anything different, what would it be? What would he have done?"

Peterson speaks to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier about Payton. Frazier was a teammate of Payton's and has routinely said he sees striking similarities between the two, on and off the field.

His name is up there with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the MVP discussion, and an MVP win for Peterson would break a string of five straight given to quarterbacks. He's certainly showing that an offense can be successful while relying heavily on the running game and validating the Vikings' decision to invest heavily in him with a lucrative contract extension before last season.

"I definitely want to keep the running backs highlighted," Peterson said. "It's started to turn into more of a spread, quarterback-friendly NFL. But just keep letting them know that there are going to be running backs that can do this.

"Just give young guys the inspiration to try to be better than me. Just inspire them to get on top of their game to be better so that running backs continue to prosper in this league and have coaches and organizations respect us so we can continue to not only play the game we love, but take care of our family."

LaDainian Tomlinson, another running back with Texas roots, won the MVP award in 2006, the last time a non-quarterback has won the award.

"It would definitely be nice to do that," Peterson said. "And I feel like it will happen. I just have the confidence in myself and the guys that surround me who have played such a big part in this the whole season."

One more game to strengthen his case. One more game to reel in those records and try to extend this magical season for at least another week.

"Coming into the season after going through the rehab process, I just told myself that I wanted to lead my team to a championship and make sure that I contribute and do my part," Peterson said. "I've been doing it. I just ask God to continue to bless me."

96% Monsters, Inc. 3D

All Critics (178) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (182) | Rotten (8) | DVD (45)

It may be harder nowadays to dazzle audiences with fancy visual effects, but Monsters, Inc. 3D proves that smart, imaginative storytelling still does the trick every time.

Most of the charm of "Monsters Inc." comes from its vocal cast.

If history is any guide, you and your family - whether young or old - will probably want to see "Monsters University" over and over.

The movie itself stands up well, even from an adult, two-dimensional perspective.

Its reassuring message is more relevant than ever.

The good guys are those who realize that laughter is stronger than fear. That's a message worth taking to heart these jittery days.

There's really little reason to check out Monsters, Inc. 3D in... well, 3D, rather than going for a good old-fashioned 2D screening instead.

It does well, but not brilliantly: an amusing trifle from a studio whose best work still lay ahead of it.

Not quite a Pixar classic, but funny, witty and visually spectacular enough to be enjoyed again on the big screen.

Monsters, Inc. continues a positive 3D trend for the company, who appear to be selecting their upgraded titles wisely, choosing features that benefit from the additional depth.

Not even the opportunistic 3D-ification can squander the pure delight of the film's meticulously detailed world of ragtag creatures.

[A] sparkling cartoon ...

John Lasseter and the Pixar crew know how to turn shared human feelings and experiences into strange and delightful animated features. "Monsters, Inc." is one of their most solid efforts.

A typically engrossing Pixar effort...

Cute, kid-friendly monster movie; may scare sensitive kids.

Though "Monsters, Inc." relies more on spinning-plates plot than its Pixar peers, this romp retains the charm and heart of the animation juggernaut's forte - adding extra to ordinary hopes, in this case leaving great impressions on the kids we love.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A stunning release of one of Pixar's most sadly underappreciated works.

Monsters, Inc. is a celebration of unforgettable characters and a world unlike any other.

Watch All of This Year's Space-Jumping, Head-Spinning World Records

Between Felix Baumgartner's insane space jump, and Spanish paraglider Horacio Llorens' 568-looper of a dive, we've had some pretty awesome world records broken this year. Of course it's hard if not impossible to catch all of them, so Guinness World Records whipped up a year-end summary, and it's well worth the watch. Not all of them are jumping from the stratosphere, but all these folks are pretty impressive nonetheless. What did you do today? [Laughing Squid] More »

Soda linked to deadly cancers

Men who drink soda face deadlier prostate cancers

If you drink soda, you pretty much have a death wish to begin with ? and it?s a wish that can come true in so many ways thanks to the sweeteners, chemicals, and actual poisons found in each can, bottle, and plastic cup.

And now, new research adds yet another way soda can grant that (death) wish: prostate cancer.

I?m not talking about harmless run-of-the mill prostate cancers here either, men. You already know those tumors don?t even need to be screened, much less treated.

But every now and then, a tumor comes along that really can kill you ? and these deadly cancers love soda more than Honey Boo Boo loves her ?go-go juice.?

These cancers are thankfully rare. But they?re less rare among men who drink soda ? much less rare, because the study finds that men who guzzle just 11 ounces a day are 40 percent more likely to get them.

That?s not a lot of soda, men. That?s less than a single can of cola a day ? and about a third of what you?ll find in a ?normal? Big Gulp (and let?s not even talk about Double Gulp, Super Gulp and all the other bucket-sized Gulps out there).

If I had to pick an ingredient in soda responsible for tumors, I wouldn?t have to think very long. It?d be the sugar. Whether it?s common high-fructose corn syrup or old-fashioned cane sugar, cancers love the stuff.

But the other carbs that cause blood sugar to spike can also have an effect on tumors ? and in the new study, everything from breakfast cereals to potatoes increased the odds of prostate tumors by anywhere from a little less than a third to a little more.

Unlike the tumors fueled by soda, these were the harmless garden-variety prostate cancers. But you?d have to be on a sugar high to deliberately increase your risk of any of them.

Easy answer here is to follow my diet advice and bring the sugars down to near zero and reduce or eliminate the rest of the carbs.

However, if you?re already in a battle with prostate cancer?but want to avoid the harsh drugs and invasive treatments that mainstream medicine is trying to shove down your throat?our friends and affiliates at Agora Health Books could have just what you are looking for. Click here to learn how to get the details on how you can conquer prostate cancer naturally.

And if the cancer threat alone isn?t enough to steer you away from sugars, keep reading.
