Google Maps and TiVo integration on Nintendo Wii U delayed beyond January

Google Maps and TiVo Netflix integration on Nintendo Wii U delayed beyond January

Nintendo's Wii U was supposed to get TVii when the console launched back in late November. That did not happen. Then, when it did launch in late December, two key features were missing: TiVo and Netflix. Despite insistence that the former would arrive in January 2013, Nintendo tells us that both are delayed beyond January to an unknown point in "early 2013." The company specifically notes that said integration is planned for the United States.

Google Maps and Street View, custom-tailored for the Wii U's tablet-like GamePad, were also given a January 2013 launch window when we first heard back in early December that they were headed to the Wii U. As it turns out, those are also delayed, albeit to a more precise "first quarter of 2013." This news comes on the heels of below expectation Wii U console sales, and word of not one, but two console updates coming later this year aimed at optimizing the hardware -- an issue we struggled with during our review of the console last year.

Mississippi River barge backup tops 1,000 after oil spill

(Reuters) - More than 1,000 barges were backed up on the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Mississippi, on Wednesday after a weekend barge accident and oil spill forced the closure of the major shipping artery, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

An 80,000-gallon tanker barge that struck a railroad bridge on Sunday continued to leak crude oil, but cleanup crews have deployed 2,800 feet of boom to contain the spill and airborne spotters have not detected any oil outside the containment area.

Response crews will lighter the oil from the damaged barge before removing the vessel from the river, but a timeline for a full reopening of the waterway to commercial shipping traffic remains unclear.

"A timeline is really hard to establish with an operation like this because there are so many factors, from getting the lightering operation set up to getting the pumping operation going," said Coast Guard spokesman Matthew Schofield.

"We want to make sure we're doing it in a safe and methodical manner. We don't want to have an additional release (of oil) and we don't want to jeopardize the safety of the crew."

Shippers rely on the Mississippi River and other inland waterways to haul billions of dollars of grain, coal, fertilizer and other commodities every year. Some 55 to 65 percent of all U.S. grain and soybean exports are transported down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

As of midday on Wednesday, 34 northbound vessels hauling a total of 532 barges and 37 southbound vessels with 524 barges were delayed by the 16-mile closure from river mile marker 425 to 441, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard has so far allowed only two small southbound barge tows hauling a total of 15 barges to transit the area to gauge whether shipping traffic would impact the cleanup effort.

"We're hoping we can continue to allow southbound vessels in 15- to 20-minute intervals through the afternoon, but if anything starts to affect the safety of the personnel we're not going to continue," Schofield said.

The river closure has not seriously impacted grain exports at the Gulf, but a prolonged traffic jam could delay the arrival of corn or soybeans needed to load ocean-going vessels. As a result, exporters may incur steep demurrage penalties if their leased vessels cannot be loaded promptly.

The oil spill was the latest in a recent string of logistical headaches for shippers.

Low water along a busy shipping corridor between St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois, has threatened to disrupt traffic on the drought-drained river since December. Dredging operations and other work aimed at keeping barges flowing have also snarled traffic at times.

The river system's busiest lock was closed for a day last week after a barge collided with a lock gate.

Polymer Patches May Enable Effective DNA Vaccines

Zothecula writes "Taking a two-month-old in for vaccination shots and watching them get stuck with six needles in rapid succession can be painful for child and parent alike. If the work of an MIT team of researchers pans out, those needles may be thing of the past thanks to a new dissolvable polymer film that allows the vaccination needle to be replaced with a patch. This development will not only make vaccinations less harrowing, but also allow for developing and delivering vaccines for diseases too dangerous for conventional techniques." The patch was designed with delivering DNA-based vaccines in mind. Thus far efforts to use DNA to generate more robust and safe vaccines has failed thanks to the immune system destroying them; the polymer film embeds itself in your skin and slowly dissolves, protecting the DNA in the process.

Analysis: Stuck in reverse, Detroit edges closer to bankruptcy

DETROIT (Reuters) - At the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month, luxury was in the air. Pricey new Bentleys and Maseratis glittered - including a Maserati 2014 Quattroporte with a $132,000 price tag; U.S. Cabinet Secretaries and dignitaries rubbed shoulders; and many of the well-heeled attendees ponied up for a $300-a-ticket black-tie charity ball.

But in a city that is slowly dying, the glitz didn't extend much beyond the Cobo Center exhibition hall.

General Motors Co and Chrysler , which along with Ford Motor Co gave the Motor City its identity, survived near-death experiences after filing for bankruptcy during the financial crisis. Now, Detroit itself is edging closer to a similar precipice, only unlike the automakers, its chances of getting a federal bailout are almost nonexistent.

The story of Detroit's decline is decades old: Its tax revenue and population have shrunk and labor costs have remained out of whack. But the city's budget problems have deepened to such an extent that it could run out of cash in a matter of weeks or months and ultimately be forced into what would be the largest-ever Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy filing in the United States.

Frustrated by the lack of concrete progress, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, last month appointed a team to scour the city's books. The audit could result in a state takeover of Detroit's finances through the appointment of an emergency financial manager. Such a manager, who would seize control of the city's checkbook, could then propose federal bankruptcy court as the best option.

Snyder, who has called the situation "a crisis in terms of financial affairs," said the team would deliver its report in February.

"Detroit is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy after the City Council has failed to make the necessary cuts to deal with having a smaller population," said Rick Jones, chairman of the Republican majority caucus in the state Senate.

Jones, who has indicated he does not favor a bankruptcy, said he would like to see an emergency manager installed to fix the city's problems. If that failed, there would be a case for finding a way to shrink the Detroit municipal area, he argued.

Detroit's population is now just over 700,000 - down 30 percent since 1990 - but the city still has to provide services to an area encompassing more land than San Francisco, Boston and the borough of Manhattan.

While Democratic Mayor Dave Bing and the Detroit City Council have moved to reduce spending and initiate some reforms to stave off a takeover, including layoffs and wage and benefit cuts, the progress may not be enough for Michigan officials and lawmakers.

STREETS WITHOUT LIGHTS

In the booming post-Second World War era, Detroit was America's fifth-largest city. Today, it ranks 18th. In addition to a sharp population decline, it suffers from high unemployment related to a loss of businesses, a flood of home foreclosures and a cut in state funding. That has led to shriveling revenue, leaving the city unable to afford a workforce of more than 10,000 and the surging health and pension costs that go with them and with its retirees. As a result, credit ratings on Detroit's approximately $8.2 billion of outstanding debt have sunk deeper into junk territory.

The city's labor costs, including health care and pensions, are shrinking in absolute terms but rising as a share of the budget. They are slated to drop to $968 million, or nearly 49.5 percent of the operating budget, in the fiscal year ending June 30 versus $1.14 billion, or 45.5 percent, a year earlier.

Signs of decline are everywhere - in a rising crime rate, streets without lights and block after block of abandoned buildings. The murder rate of one per 1,719 people last year was more than 11 times the rate in New York City. The jobless rate is above 18 percent, more than twice rate for the country as a whole.

COLLISION COURSE

A bankruptcy would be messy.

The interests of creditors would likely collide with those of labor unions wanting to protect workers' benefits, said Eric Scorsone, a Michigan State University economist who has written papers on municipal bankruptcy and on the state's emergency manager laws.

"It is going to require the players - the City Council, the mayor, the state - to be on the same page. If you go into bankruptcy with a lot of conflict and dissent, it's going to cost more," said Scorsone.

It could also be racially explosive. Detroit has the largest percentage of black people of any U.S. city, with 83 percent of the population identifying themselves as African American, black or Negro, according to the 2010 U.S. census. Most of Michigan's state government, including the governor's office, is run by white Republicans.

Detroit Council Member JoAnn Watson, who along with two other members of the city's all-black City Council has been resisting reform measures, said she is still hopeful of a federal bailout or an injection of state money that she claims the city is owed.

Mayor Bing would not comment for this story.

CONSEQUENCES, WHAT CONSEQUENCES?

The automakers have little to say publicly about the crisis. Most of their operations in Michigan are now outside Detroit, and getting any top executive to even discuss the possibility of a city bankruptcy was almost impossible at the auto show. "I don't want to get into the politics," said GM CEO Dan Akerson, while Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said: "I don't see what the consequences would be for us."

One of the city's biggest challenges is its complex set of labor agreements with a whopping 48 bargaining units that represent most of the city's workforce.

Max Newman, a bankruptcy attorney at Michigan-based Butzel Long, said a Chapter 9 bankruptcy could help the city throw out its collective bargaining agreements with unions.

Costs would have to be tackled since Detroit cannot just jack up taxes to reduce the cumulative budget deficit, which grew to $326.6 million in fiscal 2012 from $196.6 million in fiscal 2011. The state would likely resist tax increases, and they might only make matters worse anyway. "If taxes go up any further it would exacerbate the flight out of the city," Newman said.

But for some of those who have seen Detroit struggle for years, bankruptcy is starting to look like the least awful option - even though it will be painful.

"I think...off and on, that it wouldn't be a bad idea," said former Ford chief financial officer Allan Gilmour, now the president of Detroit's Wayne State University. "Let's clean this out once and for all."

The Smart Way To Use A Payday Loan | Free Finance Articles

The Smart Way To Use A Payday Loan

You have probably heard of payday loans, but you aren?t sure if they are right for you. These companies offer short-term loans to people who are having a difficult time financially. Sounds great, right? It can be if you find out everything you need to know before applying for one. Here are some tips to help you with these loans.

Do not let advertisements lie to you about payday loans, some lending institutions do not have your best interest in mind and will trick you into borrowing money, so they can charge you, hidden fees and a very high interest rate. Do not let an ad or a lending agent convince you; make the decision by yourself.

Pay close attention to fees. The interest rates that payday lenders can charge is usually capped at the state level, although there may be local community regulations as well. Because of this, many payday lenders make their real money by levying fees both in size and quantity of fees overall.

Make sure that you understand exactly what a payday loan is before taking one out. These loans are normally granted by companies that are not banks; they lend small sums of money and require very little paperwork. The loans are accessible to most people, although they typically need to be repaid within two weeks.

Before taking the plunge and deciding on a payday loan, consider other sources. The interest rates for payday loans are high and if you have better options, try them first. See if your family will loan you the money, or try a traditional lender. Payday loans should really be a last resort.

Try to find a payday loan company that offers loans to individuals with poor credit. These loans are based on your job situation, and ability to pay back the loan instead of relying on your credit. Securing this type of cash advance can also help you to re-build good credit. If you comply with the terms of the agreement, and pay it back on time.

If you are applying for a payday loan for the first time, check to see if the lender puts a limit on the amount of money you can borrow. Most companies will have a cap on your first payday loan. Then will allow you to borrow more with your second, or third loan.

Getting a short-term loan can be just the thing you need to help you through a hard time. These loans can be a great help, but only if you have all the information you need. Use these tips to help you take decisions about getting a payday loan, and you can get through these tough times more easily.

EFF speaks on the illegality of unlocking in the US and what it means for end users

EFF speaks on the illegality of unlocking in the US and what it means for end users

As of just a few days ago, unlocking your iPhone, or any other wireless device for that matter, is no longer legal. The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has stepped forward to clarify exactly what that means and who it ultimately will affect. As it turns out, it isn't necessarily the end user that would be violating the law.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, it's actually the unlockers themselves that will most likely be affected according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

More likely, wireless carriers, or even federal prosecutors, will be emboldened to sue not individuals, but rather businesses that unlock and resell phones.

Basically, wireless carriers and big business aren't going to go after the end user. If you purchased an unlock from a site on the internet and you're walking around with an illegally unlocked phone, the odds of you getting in trouble for that are almost invisible. The liability would mainly lie on the company that provided the unlock to you.

Carriers such as AT&T will unlock your iPhone for you once you've fulfilled the commitment term of your contract. This can be done by completing the full term or upgrading to a new iPhone or other device, which in turn would allow your older iPhone to be unlocked legally.

As for jailbreak, that's still legal under the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act).

The legal shield for jailbreaking and rooting your phone remains up ? it?ll protect us at least through 2015.

It's also worth noting that any device that was purchase before the new rule went into affect is still fair game. So if you've purchased an iPhone or other mobile device before that date, you're still legally entitled to unlock it, whether that's officially through your carrier or any other outlet.

Former Ecuador judge on Chevron case says plaintiffs bribed court

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A former Ecuadorean judge has claimed that after stepping down from the bench, he illegally ghostwrote a judgment in which Chevron was ordered to pay $18.2 billion (11.5 billion pounds) for polluting the rain forest, and that the plaintiffs paid a $500,000 bribe to the judge who issued the ruling.

Alberto Guerra, who presided over the case from 2003 to 2004, made the allegations in a sworn statement filed by Chevron on Monday in support of a lawsuit in Manhattan federal district court accusing the Ecuadorean plaintiffs and their lawyers of fraud.

"Another participant in the fraud has now come forward rather than wait to be exposed by others," Hewitt Pate, Chevron vice president and general counsel, said in a statement.

Karen Hinton, a spokeswoman for the plaintiffs, in a statement called Guerra a "disgraced former Ecuadorean judge who is being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by Chevron to make false allegations about the Ecuador trial court judgment."

Guerra was not available to comment.

The filing is the latest in an ever-escalating two-decade battle between Chevron and residents of Ecuador's Lago Agrio over oil extraction in the region.

Residents claimed that Texaco, which Chevron acquired in 2001, polluted the rainforest and water supplies with hundreds of unlined waste pits from 1964 to 1992, damaging crops and public health including deaths from cancer.

Chevron claimed that its share of the waste pits had been cleaned up and that its activities were not responsible for environmental and public health damage.

An Ecuadorean court entered the $18.2 billion judgment in 2011. The award was upped to $19 billion in July.

The National Court of Justice, Ecuador's highest court, last month appointed three judges to hear Chevron's final appeal in that country of the court decision.

One of them, Oscar Bermudez, told Reuters that they are not allowed to consider new evidence.

"Our job is to make sure the sentence issued by the previous court complies with legal and constitutional precepts ... they can provide new evidence but the court cannot take it into account," he said, adding that Chevron may consider presenting Guerra's statement to Ecuador's attorney general for his consideration.

Chevron, with no assets in Ecuador now, has fought a global campaign against the enforcement of the $19 billion award. In February 2011, it filed the New York federal lawsuit against the plaintiffs and their lawyers, including Steven Donziger and Pablo Fajardo, contending the judgment was obtained via fraud.

The declaration Monday by Guerra was filed by Chevron in support of that lawsuit.

According to the document, the Chevron case had been assigned to Judge Nicolas Zambrano in 2009. Guerra said Zambrano at times ask him to ghostwrite civil rulings for him for $1,000 a month, which he says was illegal.

The case was then given to another judge, Juan Nunez, who later had to recuse himself due to allegations of bribery brought by Chevron after Nunez was caught on tape discussing the case. Zambrano then took charge again.

In his sworn declaration, Guerra wrote: "Zambrano told me he was in direct contact with Mr. Fajardo and that the Plaintiffs' representatives had agreed to pay him USD $500,000 from whatever money they were to collect from the judgment, in exchange for allowing them to write the judgment in the Plaintiffs' favor."

Guerra in his declaration said he received $38,000 from the company for the costs of providing the evidence. Kent Robertson, a spokesman for Chevron, confirmed Chevron has agreed to pay Guerra's family $10,000 for monthly living expenses and $2,000 for housing.

"He's a scoundrel," Fajardo told Reuters on Monday. "I've never met Mr. Guerra, but I know who he is and how he's being paid by Chevron."

In a statement from the Ecuador plaintiffs last week, Fajardo said Guerra had at one point offered to provide testimony to the rainforest communities if they would pay him, though they had refused.

Zambrano could also not be contacted on Monday. He has been out of the public eye since his dismissal last February for releasing a drug trafficker in an act described by the judicial watchdog as "obvious negligence."

The New York case is Chevron Corporation v. Donziger, et al., U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, 11-00691.

How Tablets and Smartphones benefit Individuals with Special Needs

All too often we take everyday things for granted; ordering lunch from a menu, reading a book, typing an email. Yet there are many people that can't enjoy completing these everyday tasks. For example, part of what is so difficult in the life of someone with autism is that even though they can think and feel and experience most of the same things the rest of us do, they cannot communicate it orally. They cannot physically say that they are too hot, cold or hungry. They lack the ability to communicate the most basic of things you or I might remark about countless times a day.

Recently I watched a segment on 60 minutes where Leslie Stahl spent time with a few persons with autism as well as a therapist and some teachers. The results of what an iPad could do for a person with autism could bring a tear to your eye, especially when you don't realize how difficult it is for them to verbalize things that we take for granted.?

One of the apps suggested on the 60 minutes segment was called Prologuo2Go. The autistic male in the segment was able to express things verbally that he could never do before. It was awesome to see his face light up when he was able to order breakfast from the waitress.?

You may be thinking, ?What about the iPhone??? Apple has a bunch of different features that are helpful to those who are visually/hearing impaired.

Aside from some of the obvious features like Siri, the virtual assistant, Apple has some not so obvious tricks up their sleeve.? Most of these features you?ll need to activate under the Settings>General>Accessibility section.?

One of the best features, at least I think so, is under the ringtone section.? If you have a hard time hearing a ringtone, you can set up custom vibrations so your favorite contacts can have their own pattern.? They have a few that you can play around with and you can even create some of your own.? There?s also an option to have your LED camera light to flash with an incoming call.?

Another feature, particularly for those who may be deaf in one ear, is Mono Audio.? This will take any music that is in a stereo format and pipe it through one ear bud.? Now you can have it all in one ear or you can have a stronger sound going into the left or the right.? Either way, it?ll let you get the full effect of the music.?

Visually speaking, there are some awesome features like Zoom.? This feature, no matter if you're in a third party or an Apple app, will let you zoom in on the page all the way up to 500%.? There is also a section to amplify your text which ranges from normal font to 56pt font.? Using Voice Over, everything on the screen will be spoken to you, from reading text to trying to find an app, when you click on a part of the screen, it will tell you exactly what it is.?

Technology has some wonderful benefits for everyone.

?But when it comes to certain positions on issues, when it comes to trying to do what's best for the country, when it comes to really trying to make decisions based on fact as opposed to ideology, when it comes to being willing to compromise, the Democrats, not just here in this White House, but I would say in Congress also, have shown themselves consistently to be willing to do tough things even when it's not convenient, because it's the right thing to do,? he continued. ?And we haven't seen that same kind of attitude on the other side.?

That?s certainly not the perception of leading Republicans in Congress, particularly in the wake of an inauguration speech in which Obama was loud and clear on such favorite liberal themes as gun control, gay rights, and climate change.

?When you saw his speech, say, at the inauguration, it leads us to conclude that he?s not looking to be moderate, that he?s not looking to move to the middle,? Rep. Paul Ryan said on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? Sunday. ?He?s looking to go farther to the left, and he wants to fight us every step of the way politically.?

"All of [Obama?s] statements and all of the comments lead me to believe that he's thinking more of a political conquest than a political compromise,? Ryan said, echoing House Speaker John Boehner?s recent comment that Obama wanted to ?annihilate? the GOP. He also gave a back-handed compliment to Hillary Clinton, the retiring Secretary of State who ? very conceivably ? could face off against Ryan in a run for the presidency in 2016.

?If we had a Clinton presidency, if we had Erskin Bowles chief of staff of the White House, or president of the United States, I think we would?ve fixed this fiscal mess by now,? Ryan said. ?That?s not the kind of presidency we?re dealing with right now.?

Like Obama, Ryan acknowledged his party?s need to attract a wider range of voters by communicating in a way that addresses peoples? personal needs and concerns.

?We have to expand our appeal to more people and show how we?ll take the country?s founding principles and apply them to the problems of the day to offer solutions to fix our problems,??he said. ?We have to show our ideas are better at fighting poverty. How our ideas are better at solving health care. How our ideas are better at solving the problems people are experiencing in their daily lives and that?s a challenge we have to rise to, and I think we?re up for it.?

Ryan hinted at one controversial issue on which he might agree with Obama: The need for stricter regulations on gun registration, including background checks.

?The question of whether or not a criminal is getting a gun is a question we need to look at,? he said. ?We need to look into making sure there aren?t big loopholes where a person can illegally purchase a firearm.?

On guns, Obama pointed to the differences in perception in Democrat-leaning urban areas and rural areas more likely to vote Republican ? something he said his party often fails to do.

?I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations. And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake,? he told the New Republic.

?Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas. And if you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were ten, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family's traditions, you can see why you'd be pretty protective of that,? he said. ?So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes.?

Why Fox News dropped Sarah Palin

After John McCain picked Sarah Palin out of relative obscurity to be his vice presidential running mate, she became a political force of nature. Since then, however, her star has lost its luster within the GOP, and she?s parted ways with Fox News.

Sarah Palin delivers the keynote address to activists from America's political right at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington last February. Palin is out as a Fox News Channel contributor, the network reported Friday.

When the history of US politics in the early 21st century is written, two figures will stand out: Barack Obama and Sarah Palin.

The election of Mr. Obama to the highest elective office ? the first African-American to win the presidency ? did not necessarily signal a new era of post-racial politics. But coming just a generation after federal troops in the South (and a federal judge in Boston) were necessary to desegregate public schools, it was a huge milestone.

Sarah Palin was not the first woman to win a major political party?s vice presidential nomination; that was US Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, Walter Mondale?s running mate way back in 1984.

But the presence of the former Alaska governor on the GOP ticket headed by Sen. John McCain in 2008 invigorated the party ? at the time, at least. And although they lost to Obama and Joe Biden, it wasn?t the blowout that Mondale and Ferraro suffered against Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

Ferraro went on to relative political obscurity, twice losing Democratic Party primaries for the US Senate. Ms. Palin, on the other hand, was just getting started when the returns for the 2008 presidential race were being counted.

How well do you know Sarah Palin? A quiz.

Over the next few years, she became a political force of nature ? stirring a tea party base that thronged to her appearances, scaring GOP incumbents deemed too willing to find common ground with Democrats, and building a very lucrative business that included (for one season, at least) her own ?reality? TV show while launching one of her five children ? daughter Bristol ? on her own entertainment career.

Meanwhile, as with some other conservative ex-elected officials like Mike Huckabee, Palin was given a sinecure of sorts as a commentator for Fox News, which built a studio in her home in Wasilla, Alaska, from which she railed against the ?lamestream media? and anything Obama proposed or did as President.

No matter that Mrs. Palin became the butt of liberal jokes, driving left-leaning bloviators nuts, and giving a huge boost to the acting career of Saturday Night Live?s Tina Fey. Her ?Grizzly Mama? persona ? a sharp-edged folksiness with the occasional rhetorical stumble ? attracted at least as many people as it turned off. ?Run, Sarah, Run!? echoed among adoring throngs urging her to run for the White House.

Although not every candidate she endorsed in 2010 won, her record was respectable.

'Game of Thrones' actor Wilko Johnson on his terminal cancer: I feel ...

Andre Csillag / Rex Features via AP file

By Us Weekly

Fans will be happy to know that Wilko Johnson is in very good spirits after doctors diagnosed him with terminal pancreatic cancer. The "Game of Thrones" actor and Dr. Feelgood bandmember shared the heartbreaking news on Jan. 10 on his Facebook page, and is now opening up about how he's doing now.

In an intimate interview with Radio 4's Front Row (via BBC), Johnson, 65, explained that he went to the doctor after feeling a lump in his stomach, which he initially ignored. When his doctors gave him the shocking diagnosis, he explained, it strangely energized him.

PHOTOS: Stars who have battled cancer

"We walked out of there and I felt an elation of spirit. You're walking along and suddenly you're vividly alive. You're looking at the trees and the sky and everything and it's just 'whoah,'" Johnson said. "I am actually a miserable person. I've spent most of my life moping in depressions and things, but this has all lifted."

Johnson opted not to receive any chemotherapy after he learned such treatment could only prolong his life by two months. With about 9 or 10 months to live, according to his doctor, the star says he plans to live his life to the fullest until the end. The musician is scheduled to perform a farewell tour with shows beginning February in France.

PHOTOS: Celebrity health scares

"If the cancer kicks in before that, then I can't go on stage. I'm not going to go on stage looking ill -- I don't wanna present a sorry spectacle!" he said. "I'm not hoping for a miracle cure or anything. I just hope it spares me long enough to do these gigs -- then I'll be a happy man."

PHOTOS: British stars

The talented star says he still "bursts into tears" thinking about his late wife, Irene, who died of cancer eight years ago, but has managed to keep his spirits up when thinking about his own death.

"Right now it's just fantastic -- it makes you feel alive," Still, he observed, "This position I'm in is so strange, in that I do feel fit and yet I know death is upon me."

HIV-like viruses in non-human primates have existed much longer than previously thought

HIV-like viruses in non-human primates have existed much longer than previously thought

Friday, January 25, 2013

Viruses similar to those that cause AIDS in humans were present in non-human primates in Africa at least 5 million years ago and perhaps up to 12 million years ago, according to study published January 24 in the Open Access journal PLOS Pathogens by scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Until now, researchers have hypothesized that such viruses originated much more recently.

HIV-1, the virus responsible for AIDS, infiltrated the human population in the early 20th century following multiple transmissions of a similar chimpanzee virus known as SIVcpz. Previous work to determine the age of HIV-like viruses, called lentiviruses, by comparing their genetic blueprints has calculated their origin to be tens of thousands of years ago.

However, other researchers have suspected this time frame to be much too recent. Michael Emerman, Ph.D., a virologist and member of the Human Biology Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Alex Compton, a graduate student in the Emerman Lab, describe the use of a technique to estimate the extent to which primates and lentiviruses have coexisted by tracking the changes in a host immunity gene called APOBEC3G that were induced by ancient viral challenges.

They report that this host immunity factor is evolving in tandem with a viral gene that defends the virus against APOBEC3G, which allowed them to determine the minimum age for the association between primates and lentiviruses to be around 5 or 6 million years ago, and possibly up to 12 million years ago.

These findings suggest that HIV-like infections in primates are much older than previously thought, and they have driven selective changes in antiviral genes that have incited an evolutionary arms race that continues to this day. The study also confirms that viruses similar to HIV that are present in various monkey species today are the descendants of ancient pathogens in primates that have shaped how the immune system fights infections.

"More than 40 non-human primate species in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with strains of HIV-related viruses," Emerman said. "Since some of these viruses may have the potential to infect humans as well, it is important to know their origins."

Aaron Neville: My True Story

Blue Note 2013

Aaron NevilleSo the a cappella fellas from the old neighbourhood gather under a bridge around a fire in a trash can, taking jolts from a bottle of Thunderbird, smoking ciggies, eyeing the ladies and belting out their favourite doo wop to try and impress them with their style. It?s all Wildroot, finger snaps and dad?s Old Spice fusing with the ghosts of Frankie Lymon and The Five Satins singing contrapuntal harmony in a background purple with the ache of lost love.

Here, one of music?s greatest voices pays stirring tribute to the music that informed his youth and underscored his entire oeuvre. With his rich falsetto soaring, ?Aaron Neville not only covers classic doo wop but manages in the end to convince us how much we miss impassioned and innocent ballad crooning while our acne healed and our hearts broke.

As a member of the Neville Brothers he understands a thing or too about groove. So he brings a crackerjack band to the fore including the punchy guitar of co-producer Keith Richards and keyboards from Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers. What results is a shimmering and singular paean to the glory days of The Del-Vikings, Dion & The Belmonts and The Cadets.

Neville?s take on Ruby Ruby, Under The Boardwalk, Be My Baby and Gypsy Woman for starters, are nothing less than arresting. This collection of? twelve songs is timeless at the same time that it?s fresh and exhilarating.

So the question arises ? Do we need another CD of doo wop covers? Probably not. But do we need an album of heartfelt, immaculate, masterful, passionate songs from one of the most elegant voices around? Absolutely.

Classic, soulful and elevating.

Gary Allan: Set You Free

MCA Nashville 2013

Gary AllanThere?s been a passel of gunslingers through these parts before all claiming to be the undisputed outlaw king of hurtin? tunes. They drift into town all slack-jawed and woebegone, red eyed with whisky stink and a six day growth of beard as though that lent credibility to their claim. Bad hombres. Tougher?n twenty miles of sagebrush and rattlers.

But there?s only one head honcho of hurt and it ain?t them. They only know the one way to say it. This?un?s got a better way and when he draws he aims for the head and the heart and never misses, never wastes a bullet.

He sings like he was born in a honky tonk and there?s a certain sawdust on the floor savvy to this song cycle about failed romance and the late nights all alone aftermath. Gary Allan doesn?t sound much like Nashville. Instead, he?s as much a bluesman as a jazz-ophile with a lean towards a certain reggae-ocity in places.

Suffice to say then that this as country as it gets. Check out ?It Aint? The Whiskey? for the epitome of the heartbreak song, or ?Sand In My Soul? about picking up the pieces and moseying on that?s only topped by the closer ?Good As New?.

He?s a bad hombre. He?s neo-traditional at the same time he?s old school but here he wrangles up a concept album that leans hard on a life less lonely for the wisdom gleaned from its travails. Gary Allan?s best.

Smart, savvy, assured country.

Fred Hersch: Alone At The Vanguard

Palmetto Records 2011

Fred HerschIn which the ghost of Thelonious Monk strides along New York?s Seventh Avenue hoping to catch a set at the jazz Mecca where legends still come to play. He?s thinking of Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner and hoping whomever?s on the bandstand can evoke some of those memories and that great art.

What he witnesses leave him awestruck. The craftsman at the keyboards even reworks the jabbing staccato of his own ?Work? turning it into a flowing elegant cascade and the lush down tempo ?In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning? makes him weep.

Tearful ghosts aside, this nine song set captured live at the erstwhile Village Vanguard from a week long run is brash, unpredictable, ebullient and rife with enough chordal flourishes and two-handed runs melding seamlessly into each other to make even the homage to Robert Schumann feel like jazz.

Fred Hersch is a genius. He lays out varied textures with an imagination and a dexterity that makes even the more abstract statements seem masterful and grand. His is a supple talent and the proliferation of grace notes, ?rubato; the sometimes angular harmonies working through every register of the keyboard elevate the very idea of jazz piano.

This seventy minute set is an artist at the height of his powers and is an indisputable must have in any jazz collection.

Gracious, big-hearted and impeccable.

Obama names new White House chief of staff in shake-up

Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough at an interfaith forum in 2011 (Cliff Owen/AP)President Barack Obama on Friday will formally announce that he has picked Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough as White House chief of staff, part of a sweeping shake-up at the dawn of the president's second term, an aide said.

Obama is expected to detail the personnel changes at 12:10 p.m. in the East Room of the White House, the aide said on condition he not be named. The choice of McDonough to succeed Jack Lew, who has been nominated to be treasury secretary, confirms a pattern of the president picking trusted, long-time advisors?and not outsiders?for key posts.

McDonough, 43, has been with Obama since the then-senator first came to Washington a decade ago. The aide emphasized that McDonough has ?played a key role in all of the major national security decisions? in Obama?s first term, including the withdrawal from Iraq, the ongoing pull-out from Afghanistan, and the repeal of ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell.?

?As a veteran of Capitol Hill, Denis understands the importance of reaching across the aisle to make progress for the American people?whether it?s on jobs and economy, health care or education, reducing the deficit or addressing climate change,? the aide said.

Among the other changes: Combative Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer will succeed David Plouffe as senior advisor, while respected long-time Democratic communications pro Jennifer Palmieri will replace him. Obama has repeatedly listed poor public relations as one of the greatest failings of his first term.

The head of the Department of Justice?s national security division, Lisa Monaco, will move into the White House to replace John Brennan as Obama?s top homeland security and counter-terrorism aide (pending Brennan?s confirmation to head the CIA).

Some additional changes:

- Rob Nabors will become assistant to the president and deputy White House chief of staff for policy

- Tony Blinken will take over McDonough's job as deputy national security advisor

- Danielle Gray will become assistant to the president and cabinet secretary

- Katy Kale will become assistant to the president for management and administration

- Miguel Rodriguez will be assistant to the president and director of legislative affairs

- David Simas will become assistant to the president and deputy senior advisor for communications and strategy.

Diet, parental behavior and preschool can boost children's IQ

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements -- including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc -- have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading -- teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them -- were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

Apple TV would signal future innovation

7 hrs.

Somebody pass Apple the remote ? Wall Street wants the channel changed.

Skittish investors sent Apple stock down 12?percent Thursday, one day after the computer giant?s quarterly revenue came in below estimates, and some analysts worried that weaker demand for its products was an indication that the company?s innovative prowess died with former CEO Steve Jobs.

?In any other context, the idea of punishing a company that delivered an 18 percent year-over-year increase, bringing quarterly revenue to $54.5 billion, would be absurd, but Apple, in a way, is a victim of its own success. Investors now expect the company to come in and reinvent entire practices and product categories, as it did with listening to music and cell phones, and they expect the next candidate for an iMakeover to be the television.

?We don?t think the old game plan is working,? Keith Bachman, analyst at BMO Capital Markets, wrote in a research note Thursday, lowering his 12-month target price from $640 to $580.

Related:?Why?stocks?rallied?even?while?Apple?got?crushed

While analysts tend to have more or less a clear consensus about the hurdles to entering the television market, they?re not unified around a clear idea of what "Apple TV" would come to mean. Whether or not they believe Apple management has a vision and the means to execute it shape their longer-term view of the company?s future.

?If products we hoped for like an iOS-based TV, and significant enhancements to platform components like Siri and iCloud don?t appear to be in store for 2013, we would lose confidence in the pace of innovation at Apple,? Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope wrote, lowering his 12-month target price from $760 to $660.

Analysts also voiced more prosaic, near-term concerns in response to Apple?s report and forward-looking guidance: A faster timeline for introducing new products and a slate of offerings that includes cheaper devices both could eat into Apple?s profit margin. ?I think that the challenge of the company would be present today with or without Jobs,? Doug Kass, president of Seabreeze Partners Management, said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday.

But these factors wouldn?t matter as much if Wall Street believed that Tim Cook has the Next Big Thing up his sleeve. On the subject of TV, Cook was emphatic but vague on yesterday?s conference call. He touted the two?million-plus unit sales of the Apple TV set-top box and told analysts, ?I have said in the past this is an area of intense interest for us and it remains that, and I tend to believe that there is a lot we can contribute in this space.?

In an interview with NBC?s Brian Williams in December, Cook also expounded on TV, saying, ?It?s a market that we see that has been left behind.?

?It?s definitely the next area where investors are looking in terms of innovation,? said Brian Colello, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar.

The TV industry doesn?t necessarily need ? or want ? Apple, though. ?The difficulty is that the vast majority of TV content is owned by a small handful of companies who?s primary business model is bundling and cable [and] satellite distribution,? Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, said via email. ?Those companies have little interest in contributing content to a service that could disrupt their primary business model.?

When Apple reinvented the way we listen to music, it presented the ailing record industry with a solution to flagging sales and rampant piracy. When it turned the smartphone from an executive tool to a go-everywhere gadget, mobile carriers came around to the realization that they could create a whole new revenue stream by selling data plans to casual users.

Today, Americans have more choice than ever when it comes to their TV-viewing habits: They can digitally record a show to watch later, access streaming content from sources like Hulu or Netflix, get premium sports or movie content via subscriptions stacked onto their cable bundle and so on.

It?s a jumble of options that can be hard to sort and search through, and often requires juggling multiple remote controls and services. Smart TVs that attempt to corral this overflow of content are on the market, but they?re not user-friendly enough to be appealing to the masses, Colello said. ?There have been some improvements but nothing is seamless yet, so Apple has an opportunity to close the door and make that a seamless interface,? he said.

Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffrey, also thinks a focus on TV content delivery could be Apple?s silver bullet. ?The question is, how can Apple improve the user experience without disrupting the amount of money the content providers are making,? he said. ?They can do things around content that can make the experience much different,? he said. In theory, a viewer only would have to go to a single platform and use one, intuitive remote control ? maybe one that understands plain English ? to search for or schedule shows to watch.

Munster thinks Apple plans to go beyond the set-top box. ?Our feeling is, and we feel strongly about this, is that it?s an actual television... given Apple?s DNA of design as a feature, plus the only way to truly fix the remote control problem is to put it all in one panel,? he said.

Trip Chowdhry, managing director of equity research at Global Equities Research, suggested Apple could make use of new display technology to develop TVs with ?ultra? or ?4HD? high-definition resolution.

It?s an intriguing idea, but Colello said Apple doesn?t have the luxury of time on its side. ?Apple does not have several years to do this,? he said. ?I think the stock tells you that investors are antsy already.? TV is the best category for Apple to redeem itself with a new blockbuster, he said. ?It would be an important signal after Steve Jobs? passing that innovation still exists at the company.?
