Obama Shark Fin Soup Controversy: POTUS Criticized For Visit To ...

There are a few boxes a serious food lover is obliged to check off when visiting San Francisco: a burrito joint, a temple of California cuisine, a house of dim sum. So President Obama was just trying to be thorough by popping into a Chinatown establishment to pick up some dumplings and buns in the course of his Bay Area voyage. But of all the dozens of restaurants he could have visited, he (or, more likely, his advance team) chose what may have been the worst possible one: Great Eastern restaurant.

Great Eastern's sale of three kinds of shark fin soup, ranging in price from $28 to $48, is not in itself illegal. California restaurants have until July 1, 2013 to sell off their remaining stock of shark's fins. And Obama didn't order anything remotely resembling the delicacy. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, he stuck to the safer waters of "shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, steamed pork buns, Shanghai dumplings and stuffed mushrooms."

That hasn't stopped animal rights advocates from pouncing on his choice of restaurant. Nor, for that matter, has the shark fin connection been the only line of attack. SF Weekly food critic Jonathan Kauffman said that Obama should have known better than to go to such a middling dim sum establishment. And HuffPost UK took a comedic -- and non-culinary -- tack by noting that many of the pictures taken at Obama's Great Eastern trip show one of the proprietor's hands in an unseemly location.

Is an LLC the Correct Move For Your Little Company? | Articles Effect

A comparatively new kind of enterprise framework is gaining reputation amongst tiny enterprise owners: the restricted liability organization or LLC.Not way back, a enterprise proprietor had solely two selections, keep a sole proprietor or integrate.

However the comparatively new LLC classification may be the right answer to someone operating a little business however who will not require the more formal structure of a corporation.

LLCs are available in all fifty states, something that wasn?t true just 10 years ago.As a result of LLCs are seen as easier to create and more flexible than a corporation, many little businesses are choosing this way of structuring their tiny business.

It is a sensible choice for someone who is beginning a company that is unlikely to ever go public as a outcome of it provides a number of of the exact same legal protections of an organization but whilst not some of the challenging tax laws related with them. But like some thing you do in company, there are advantages and drawbacks that you require to bear in thoughts of prior to making this move. Some of the advantages are:-If your company holds home, an LLC may be the much better option at tax time.

During a corporation, any profits from will increase in assets value are double taxed. For instance, the corporation as well as the officers and shareholders of the corporation face a tax if the property is sold. In an LLC, the tax is paid once by the company house owners, and not by the corporate itself.-Forming an LLC gives you a lot of the identical legal protections as a corporation. For instance, if your company gets sued, the owner?s personal assets are protected. If you?ve got an organization or arrange to start a business, it is often a sensible idea for your legal protection to make your business a separate legal entity-This business structure was allowed thus that tiny businesses would be ready to own the legal protection of an organization without the restrictions, formalities, and liabilities related to incorporating.-As a result of an LLC is less formal, the corporate isn?t required to hold board meetings or record meeting minutes making it easier to operate. Some disadvantages:-Each state?s LLC laws vary slightly, thus if your business works in several different states, you wish to understand that state?s rules for LLCs.-Corporate laws are endless, making it easier for attorneys to defend a shopper that is incorporated. LLC laws are far less prevalent, making it a lot of troublesome for attorneys.-In most states, when the owner of an LLC dies, the LLC ends as well.

In a corporation, the company entity continues on till it s formally dissolved.Whilst forming an LLC is easier and demands much less paperwork, it is a great concept to urge expert assist with this. LLC applications ought to be submitted to your state?s Secretary of State, and a couple of states need company property owners to submit an operating agreement which defines profit sharing, ownership and ownership transfer.

An 'immortal' devil's genome and the secrets of a cancer that's catching

Friday, February 17, 2012

Researchers reporting in the February 17th issue of the Cell Press journal Cell have sequenced the complete genome of one immortal devil. The genomes of the Tasmanian devil and its transmissible cancer may help to explain how that cancer went from a single individual to spreading through the population like wildfire.

The deadly transmissible facial cancer has led to the speedy decline of the island-dwelling Tasmanian devil population since its discovery and now threatens the entire species with extinction. Ultimately, the researchers hope that the new findings might point to a way to help save the Tasmanian devils.

"There are targeted drugs that work against cancer genes," said Elizabeth Murchison, a Tasmanian native working at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom. "We hope some of the mutations that we have found in genes in the devil cancer may point to therapeutic strategies."

Tasmanian facial cancer disease is spread from one Tasmanian devil to another through bites that transfer living cancer cells, and Tasmanian devils bite each other often. The first photograph of a Tasmanian devil with one of these facial tumors turned up in 1996. "At the time, it was thought to be a one-off case," Murchison said.

But soon, dozens more sick devils turned up, and by the early 2000s, "it was clear that this was a new type of infectious disease," she said. The real breakthrough came in 2006 when it was shown that all of the cancers were actually one, passed on clonally from one animal to another. That was a particular surprise because cancer doesn't usually hop from one individual to another, except in very rare instances. Normally, the immune system ensures that foreign cancers cannot survive in new hosts.

In search of answers and potential solutions, Murchison and her colleagues set out to sequence the Tasmanian devil genome and that of the cancer. Their analyses suggest that the cancer first arose relatively recently in a female Tasmanian devil.

"I call her the immortal devil," Murchison said. "Her cells are living on long after she died."

"The cancer genome has evolved as it has spread through the population, but overall it appears to be rather stable," adds Michael Stratton, senior author of the paper. "The genetic differences between 104 Tasmanian devil tumors from all around the island present us with a remarkably clear picture of how the cancer has spread in time and space over the last couple of decades, which may help with strategies for disease containment."

More than 17,000 mutations in the devil cancer genome have been catalogued, and while that may sound like a lot, it is comparable to the number of mutations found in some human cancers, says Murchison. The task now is to figure out which of the thousands of mutations are most important. Early indications suggest that changes in the immunity genes might ultimately explain how the cancer evades the immune system.

The world has already lost the Tasmanian tiger, which went extinct in the 1930s. "It would be really sad to lose our two largest marsupial carnivores, and within 100 years of each other," Murchison said. Hopefully, the new data will lead to some more definitive answers, and soon.

World News - India's hunger 'shame': 3000 children die every day ...

Severely malnourished girl Rajni, 2, is weighed by health workers in Madhya Pradesh, India, February 1.

By Reuters

Crying as she is put on an electronic scale, two-year-old Rajini's naked shriveled frame casts a dark shadow over a rising India, where millions of children have little to eat.

The children are scrawny, listless and sick in this run-down nutrition clinic in central India with its intermittent power supply. If they survive they will grow up shorter, weaker and less smart than their better-fed peers.

Rajini weighs 5 kg (11 lb), about half of what she should.

"She's as light as a leaf, this can't be good," says her grandmother, Sushila Devi, poking her rib-protruding stomach in the clinic in Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh state.

Almost as shocking as India's high prevalence of child malnutrition is the country's failure to reduce it, despite the economy tripling between 1990 and 2005 to become Asia's third largest and annual per capita income rising to $489 from $96.

1 in 4 children malnourished, global report says

A government-supported survey last month said 42 percent of children under five are underweight - almost double that of sub-Saharan Africa - compared to 43 percent five years ago.

The statistic - which means 3,000 children dying daily due to illnesses related to poor diets - led Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to admit malnutrition was "a national shame" and was putting the health of the nation in jeopardy.

"It is a national shame. Child nutrition is a marker of the many things that are not going right for the poor of India," said Purnima Menon, research fellow on poverty, health and nutrition at the Institute of Food Policy Research Institute.

India's efforts to reduce the number of undernourished kids have been largely hampered by blighting poverty where many cannot afford the amount and types of food they need.

Adnan Abidi / Reuters

Women hold their severely malnourished children as they stand outside the Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre of Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India, February 1.

Poor hygiene, low public health spending and little education and awareness have not helped. Age-old customs discriminating against women such as child marriage have also contributed, but are far harder to tackle, say experts.

In addition, shoddy management of food stocks, subsidized carbohydrate-rich food that fuel and fill the poor rather than truly nourishing them and real shortages in its poorest states have worsened the problem.

At the Shivpuri clinic, health worker Rekha Singh Chauhan tends to emaciated young children in a ward with a ganglion of electrical wires running cross its paint-chipped walls.

"We only have a handful to take care of now, but come April, the cases will shoot up," says Chauhan, adding that diseases such as diarrhea and malaria will cause an influx of sick underweight children with the onset of summer.

"The situation becomes bad. Three children are made to share a bed and many have to sleep on the floor."

That picture jars with an India clocking enviable 8-9 percent growth over the last five years that has put money in the pockets of millions of its people and fuelled demand for everything from cars and computers to clothes and fancy homes.

It has also catapulted the country onto the world stage, boosting its claim for a bigger role on forums such as the U.N. Security Council. This month, it moved closer to buying new fighter jets worth a whopping $15 billion.

Adnan Abidi / Reuters

Four-month-old Vishakha, who weighs 2.3 kg (5 lbs) and suffers from severe malnutrition, rests on a bed next to her mother at the Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre, Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India on February 1.

Yet while the urban middle classes dine in swanky shopping malls where eateries offer everything from sushi to burritos, millions of children are dying due to a lack of food.

Last month's report by the Indian charity Naandi Foundation, the first comprehensive data since a 2005/6 study, said India's "nutrition crisis" is an attributable cause for up to half of all child deaths.

Yet India's public spending on health, estimated at 1.2 percent of its GDP in 2009, is among the lowest in the world.

Remembering India's first woman photojournalist

"This isn't a quick-fix that we're looking at here, it's not a magic bullet," said Jasmine Whitbread, CEO of Save the Children International.

"Not just in India, but in countries around the world, we know that you can't just rely on trickle down. There have to be policies in place, there have got to be political choices that prioritize malnutrition."

In Shivpuri, an impoverished tribal-dominated district in Madhya Pradesh state, that reality is on full display.

The region's malnutrition level for children under five matches the national average, but child mortality rates are worse at 103 deaths per 1,000. The national average is 66 deaths per 1,000, according to U.N. children's agency, Unicef.

Most of the children here are from India's most marginalized and poorest communities, such as tribals and lower castes where literacy is poor and poverty high.

Their mothers are themselves often undernourished, forced into early marriage when they reach puberty, and give birth to underweight babies with weak immune systems.

Illiteracy or lack of awareness takes its toll as well. These mothers do not breastfeed, offering buffalo milk and contaminated water instead and making their children prone to illnesses like diarrhea, which prevents nutrient absorption.

Mostly living on less than $2 a day, these families can hardly afford anything beyond wheat chapatis that are devoid of much-needed protein and other nutrients.

Soapy milk, toxic apples: food safety in India

India's neglect of its young - 48 percent are stunted, 20 percent wasted and 70 percent anemic - will have serious repercussions. The World Bank says malnutrition in the poorest countries slashes around 3 percent from annual economic growth.

In comparison, neighboring China has already achieved its target on malnutrition and under-five child mortality goals as its economic growth has been more broad-based, focusing on health, sanitation and small holder production.

While India has several schemes already running to battle malnutrition, the Indian government is now vaunting a multi-billion-dollar food subsidy program as a possible solution.

But the Food Security Bill, which guarantees cut-price rice and wheat to 63.5 percent of the population may be more a political gimmick, experts worry, than about providing nutritious food to those who need it most.

"The Food Security Bill is a very good development, but it is a food security bill, not a nutrition security bill," said Lawrence Haddad, director of the U.K.-based Institute of Development Studies.

For the children at Shivpuri's nutrition centre, government plans mean little unless they put enough of the right food in their stomachs.

"You see her arms? They are almost the width of my thumb," says Jharna, as she carried her limp, emaciated one-year-old grand-daughter, Sakshi, into the clinic. "She is too weak. She can't even sit by herself."

The Soundtrack to Your Valentine's Day | WUD Music

Valentine?s Day means a lot of different things for different people. For those who?ve been in long-term relationships, it may be likened to an anniversary. For others, it?s an annoyance that requires an unnecessary amount of thought, time, and money. For the roommate of a sappy couple, it may be vomit-inducing. It may also be a day of taking chances. We?ve got you covered for the soundtrack of your V-Day, no matter which category you fall under. There are obvious choices, like ?Love Stinks,? but that would be mailing it in. So hopefully you find something pertinent and new to you.

?Valentine?s Day is anarchy?
?The Love War? by The Dismemberment Plan
I was reminded of this song this morning when I jumped on Facebook. My news feed was littered with new relationships and engagements. It made it feel like Valentine?s Day was a scramble to find a partner ? I envisioned a riot at a Target for the last Tickle Me Elmo (too dated a reference?). That brought to mind this song, which is seemingly about World War III being over love. It contains some excellent lyrics like the play on words ?Lovers are kissed at dawn? and ?The carriers of liberty?s lights: Jefferson, Voltaire, Thomas Paine and Barry White.? Plus, it directly references Valentine?s Day.

Download the track at The Dismemberment Plan?s site.

?My stupid roommate and their significant other won?t stop making out in my face?
?Sex and Candy? by Marcy Playground

Everybody knows that couple that is way too oblivious or unconcerned with the fact that their PDA?s make everyone want to vomit. On Valentine?s Day that problem is multiplied, and if you?re the single roommate of the canoodlers, it can make Valentine?s Day an unbearable ordeal. ?Sex and Candy? pretty much sums up the experience: ?I smell sex and candy here.? Probably don?t need to explain much more.

?I love Valentine?s Day and I love my significant other?
?Anyone Else But You? by The Moldy Peaches

So, you may be the single roommate?s roommate, but ignorance is bliss, so we won?t dwell too much on that. What?s important is that your partner makes you happy, and today?s a celebration of that. ?Anyone Else But You? is a tribute to nerd love, which is why its inclusion in Juno?s Grammy-winning soundtrack was perfect. What? You say Kimya Dawson is coming to Madison on April 20th? Man, I couldn?t have planned that any better if I tried!

?I?m a poor college student?
?Money? by The Drums

Valentine?s Day is a Hallmark holiday, right? I was reminded of this when I got to the Target checkout yesterday with my purchases and dropped way more than I anticipated. Valentine?s Day is hard on the checkbook, and when you?re in college it?s pretty gosh-darn evident. ?I want to buy you something but I don?t have any money,? Jonathan Pierce laments in The Drums? ?Money.?

?I like someone and I hope they ask me to be their Valentine but they probably won?t?
?Lover, You Should?ve Come Over? by Jeff Buckley

It?s hard not to be hopeful on Valentine?s Day? and it?s hard not to be depressed when it doesn?t work out. Jeff Buckley was one of the best documenters of the pain of unrequited and failed love, and ?Lover, You Should?ve Come Over? is one of the best examples of that fact. But don?t fret, romantics ? he leaves a glimmer of hope at the end of the song when, after wailing the title phrase, he adds, ?but it?s not too late.?

?I just broke up with someone and I?m happy to be single?
?Since U Been Gone? by Kelly Clarkson

I know, obvious choice. But try to think of a better and more pleasing to belt out ?F You? song.

?Valentine?s Day is just another reminder of how lonely I am?
?Sleep Alone? by Bat for Lashes

We?ve all been there. But perhaps the fact that Natasha Khan is really, really ridiculously good-looking will help a bit. And if she?s out there feeling ?lonely, lonely, lonely? at least it?s a reminder that it happens to everyone? and maybe she?ll be your Valentine.

?-

That about covers it. Or does it? What did I miss? What are your picks for Valentine?s Day songs?
Thanks to Nick Pjevach for his help.

Apple falls, drags Wall Street lower (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks fell on Wednesday for the third session in four, with market direction largely dictated by the swings in shares of Apple, the largest company in the world.

The S&P 500 appeared set for a strong move off a nine-month high as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) shares gained 3 percent in early trading, helped by Tuesday's disclosures that prominent hedge-fund managers had been buying the stock.

But Apple, the largest company by market capitalization, turned negative around midday and closed down 2.3 percent to $497.67, quickly reversing the Nasdaq index's advance. The stock had climbed as high as $526.29 during the session.

The fortunes of both S&P and Nasdaq have been closely tethered to Apple of late, with the benchmark S&P index and Nasdaq a near-perfect correlation over the last 50 days, showing they are moving almost in lockstep.

Doreen Mogavero, chief executive of trading firm Mogavero, Lee & Co, said from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange investors were concerned about a report that Apple had asked online retailer Amazon (AMZN.O) to halt sales of its iPad in China.

A Chinese technology firm is trying to ban shipments of Apple's iPad tablet in and out of the country in a legal battle over the iPad name.

An Apple spokeswoman referred to the company's website that says Amazon is not an authorized reseller of iPads in China or the United States.

Volume on the iPhone maker's shares surged to 50 million shares, an increase of over 400 percent when compared with its 30-day average.

"This morning, in a bout of panic buying, Apple was up another 17 points, dragging a reluctant market along with it," said Larry McMillan, president of McMillan Analysis Corp. in Morristown, New Jersey, in a report. The sharp decline "broke the market, and for the first time in quite a while, an early rally has degenerated into afternoon selling."

Apple option flow was a total of 1.77 million contracts, surpassing the record of 1.3 million contracts set last Thursday, according to Trade Alert President Henry Schwartz. About 9 percent of the option volume marketwide was on Apple.

The S&P hit a peak of 1,355.87, just shy of its July 2011 high. A break above that level would take the benchmark to its strongest since at least May of last year.

"You are looking at good old exhaustion inside of the market," said Keith Bliss, senior vice president at Cuttone & Co in New York. "From a technical standpoint, we had strong resistance at 1350, 1355 in the market, and there was no real appetite to get through it."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) dropped 97.33 points, or 0.76 percent, to 12,780.95. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 7.27 points, or 0.54 percent, to 1,343.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) fell 16.00 points, or 0.55 percent, to 2,915.83.

Industrial stocks led declines on the S&P 500, with Deere & Co (DE.N) off 5.4 percent at $84.28 after investors expected the farm equipment company to give a stronger full-year forecast.

U.S. manufacturing output rose solidly in January and a gauge of factory activity in New York state hit a 1-1/2-year high in February, adding to a run of fairly upbeat data, even though overall industrial production was flat last month.

Decliners on the Dow, which underperformed the broader market, included industrial and material stocks like Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), down 1.7 percent at $112.53.

Earlier the Dow industrials were trading near a 3 1/2 high and the Nasdaq was at a more than 11-year high.

Also weighing on the market, European Union sources said finance officials were examining ways of delaying parts or even all of a second bailout for Greece, while still avoiding a disorderly default. That rekindled fears about the region's debt crisis.

Volume was solid with about 7.38 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, above the daily average of 6.98 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1,723 to 1,273, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers 1,586 to 925.

Mich. governor ties extra school cash to learning (AP)

LANSING, Mich. ? Michigan's governor said Thursday that the state should capitalize on its brightest economic outlook in a decade by opening its checkbook to school districts ? but only those that can show their students actually are learning from year to year.

Republican Rick Snyder's plan for districts to compete for $70 million in extra state money is part of a growing trend in performance-based education funding as cash-strapped states look for ways to do more than just spread scarce dollars around.

With Michigan heading into a new budget year without the chronic deficits that plagued it for the past 10 years, Snyder wants to reward schools for how well they educate, not for merely having the best and brightest students. Several states have tied financial incentives to standardized test scores, but Snyder's plan is somewhat different.

"This year we had a surplus, so we had a lot of requests for funding," Snyder said. "But good budgeting isn't about taking that surplus and giving everyone a little bit more money ... (it's about) rewarding success and results."

It's the same carrot-and-stick approach Snyder used last year to encourage school districts and local governments to shrink their share of employee health care benefits, share or privatize services and post online reports to make their activities more transparent to taxpayers.

The education money would be divvied up based on district performance, not individual schools. Districts would get a share of the money if their third- through eighth-graders have shown a year's worth of learning in reading or math, or have acquired above-average knowledge in several subjects over a four-year period.

While critics praised Snyder for spending more on education, they argued his plan leaves schools without the resources to make the improvements he wants.

"Any money that will be funneled back to our schools is, of course, a step in the right direction," said state Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton, the top Democrat on an education spending subcommittee. "However, these funds will only provide the bare minimum in restoring the drastic and unnecessary attack on our children's education that left our schools to increase class sizes and without money for books, teaching materials and support staff."

The Republican businessman-turned-governor has clashed with teachers unions after cutting K-12 spending by $1 billion during his first year in office. His latest proposal, for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, restores about a third of that.

"Putting a fraction of that $1 billion back into schools doesn't fix the problems that such a massive cut caused last year. It only continues to enrich the corporate special interests who benefited from the $1.8 billion tax cut that the education cuts enabled," Michigan Education Association President Steven Cook said in a statement.

Teacher Jennifer Bonutti also found Snyder's proposed increase inadequate. Her son is a first-grader in Farmington, northwest of Detroit. Cutbacks there have meant teacher layoffs and at least 25 students in her son's classroom, while fourth-grade classrooms often have 35.

"They want to tie the money to performance, (but) we're still going to have overcrowded classrooms," she said. "How can that teacher be effective with 35 kids? As a parent, it's frustrating. As a teacher, it's tough."

While Snyder is seeking $70 million for the incentive project, that's just a small fraction of his proposed $12.5 billion school aid budget, which he outlined during a speech Thursday.

Mike Griffith, senior policy analyst at the Denver-based Education Commission of the States, said that while several states are trying some sort of performance-based program, most represent only a small chunk of their schools' spending.

The federal No Child Left Behind program penalizes individual schools where students don't make annual progress, and Michigan isn't the first state to consider rewarding schools that do well. Ohio gives an additional $17 per student to districts and community schools rated excellent or excellent with distinction, and Iowa offers incentives for districts that meet a wide number of measures that go beyond test scores.

Griffith said he didn't know, however, if Michigan would be the only state to tie extra money solely to year-to-year improvement, rather than overall test scores, graduation rates or other such measures often used by states to award bonuses.

Besides the changes to elementary and middle school, the governor also would require results when awarding funding to universities and community colleges.

Higher education, which saw its funding cut 15 percent in the current budget, would get a 3 percent increase ? but only for universities and colleges that meet certain benchmark improvements in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to all students and to low-income students receiving Pell Grants.

Michigan State Board of Education member John Austin, a Democrat, said Snyder is taking the right steps to reward public schools, community colleges and universities for their performance. But he worries funding remains too low, noting that cuts to elementary, secondary and higher education have been "decimating" in recent years.

"We have not combined accountability reforms with sufficient resources to empower great teaching, and turbocharge our colleges and universities as engines of opportunity," Austin said. "Other states and countries are much more committed to education."

Some Examples of Home Improvement Projects - Remodeling ...

Some Examples of Home Improvement ProjectsThere are many different types of home improvement projects. Some are more popular than others are with homeowners these days. Some can be done on your own, while others are best to left up to a contractor.

When it comes down to managing the costs of your home improvement projects, keep in mind that these kinds of projects frequently go over budget. Also, remember that home improvements can also serve to increase the resale value of your home, in addition to making it more enjoyable for your family now.

Some of the most popular types of home improvement projects include:

  • Adding a family fruit and vegetable garden
  • Building a brick driveway
  • Getting new trim added to your home
  • Installing new energy efficient windows
  • Building a patio or deck for your back yard
  • Renovating a kitchen or bathroom
  • Finishing your basement
  • Adding new rooms to your home

Although many of these are great DIY projects that a handy person may be able to tackle on their own, others are probably better left to professional remodelers. For example, most people will not hire an outside contractor to start a family garden, but they will usually call an experienced builder for home additions or sunroom installation. With these kinds of projects, you would be wise to hire professionals who have been completing these sorts of home improvement projects for years.

Maine girl bouncing back after 6-organ transplant (AP)

HOLLIS, Maine ? A 9-year-old Maine girl is home from a Boston hospital healthy, active and with high hopes ? and a new stomach, liver, spleen, small intestine, pancreas, and part of an esophagus to replace the ones that were being choked by a huge tumor.

It's believed to be the first-ever transplant of an esophagus and the largest number of organs transplanted at one time in New England.

Spunky and bright-eyed as she scampered around her family's farmhouse outside Portland, Alannah Shevenell said Thursday that she's glad to be feeling well again and able to go sledding, make a snowman, work on her scrapbooks and give her grandmother a little good-humored sass.

The best part, though? "Being home," she said. "Just being home."

It was 2008 when Alannah, then 5, began running a fever and losing weight while her belly swelled. Doctors discovered the tumor that year and twice attempted to remove it, as it made its way like octopus legs from organ to organ. But it was difficult to access what turned out to be a rare form of sarcoma, said Debi Skolas, Alannah's grandmother, and chemotherapy didn't do the trick, either.

All the time, the growth ? known as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor ? continued to grow in her abdomen, causing pain, making it hard to eat and swelling her up with fluid. Surgery was the last resort to save her life, and Alannah spent more than a year on a waiting list for the organs, said Dr. Heung Bae Kim, the lead surgeon on the procedure at Children's Hospital Boston.

The family was told there was a 50 percent chance Alannah wouldn't survive the procedure. But without it, she had no chance whatsoever.

Things were more tense than celebratory in October when doctors prepared to remove the growth and the organs in one fell swoop and replace them with organs transplanted in one tangled piece from another child of similar size.

The hardest part was taking out her organs and the tumor, Kim said, calling it a difficult operation with lots of blood loss.

"It's probably one of the most extensive tumor removals ever done," the surgeon said.

Dr. Allan Kirk, professor of surgery at Emory University in Atlanta and the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Transplantation, said no other esophageal transplant has been reported in medical literature.

After the surgery, Alannah spent three more months at the hospital, with her grandmother sleeping every night in a lounge chair by her bed. She battled infections and complications from the surgery before finally being given the OK to leave.

She arrived back home Wednesday in the 192-year-old house on a country road where she lives with her grandmother and grandfather, Jamie Skolas, in Hollis, a town of 4,500 residents about 20 miles west of Portland.

But just because she's home doesn't mean she's out of the woods. Alannah has to take nine medications each day, some two, three or four times. Her grandparents have to precisely measure what goes in and comes out of her body, and check her blood sugar.

She has an ostomy pouch and feeding tube attached to her for nutrition as she slowly gets used to eating again. Scars from her surgeries look like a roadmap on her stomach. A tutor comes to the home 20 hours a week for her schooling.

Her immune system is so weak that she can't go to places with large numbers of other people, such as school, church or a mall. She can't eat raw vegetables or fruits unless they have thick skins because of concerns over germs, and she'll never be able to swim in a lake because of the bacteria. The Skolases installed ultraviolet lights in their heating ducts to kill mold, mildew and bacteria that might sicken Alannah.

Alannah is aware of her limitations and what she's been through. "Don't even ask," she says when the subject of the medical costs, which have been covered by MaineCare ? Maine's version of Medicaid ? come up.

She's talkative and enjoys bantering with her grandparents.

"Grammy, you're not always right," she said to end a conversation.

The Skolases, who took Alannah in several years ago but declined to discuss the whereabouts of her parents, have made sacrifices for her through the years. Their hand-crafted-furniture business has suffered, with Debi devoting her time to care for Alannah, and the couple has dipped into retirement savings to make ends meet.

Friends have organized a fundraiser to help raise money to offset the costs.

More than anything, though, the family is thankful for the girl's second chance at life and to the family that went through the pain of losing a child and before deciding to donate the organs to help Alannah.

"That was a courageous decision," Debi Skolas said. "I still cry when I think about it."

How antipsychotic medications cause metabolic side effects such as obesity and diabetes

How antipsychotic medications cause metabolic side effects such as obesity and diabetes

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

In 2008, roughly 14.3 million Americans were taking antipsychotics?typically prescribed for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or a number of other behavioral disorders?making them among the most prescribed drugs in the U.S. Almost all of these medications are known to cause the metabolic side effects of obesity and diabetes, leaving patients with a difficult choice between improving their mental health and damaging their physical health. In a paper published January 31 in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) reveal how antipsychotic drugs interfere with normal metabolism by activating a protein called SMAD3, an important part of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) pathway.

The TGFbeta pathway is a cellular mechanism that regulates many biological processes, including cell growth, inflammation, and insulin signaling. In this study, all antipsychotics that cause metabolic side effects activated SMAD3, while antipsychotics free from these side effects did not. What's more, SMAD3 activation by antipsychotics was completely independent from their neurological effects, raising the possibility that antipsychotics could be designed that retain beneficial therapeutic effects in the brain, but lack the negative metabolic side effects.

"We now believe that many antipsychotics cause obesity and diabetes because they trigger the TGFbeta pathway. Of all the drugs we tested, the only two that didn't activate the pathway were the ones that are known not to cause metabolic side effects," said Fred Levine, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Sanford Children's Health Research Center at Sanford-Burnham and senior author of the study.

In a previous study aimed at developing new insights into diabetes, Dr. Levine and his team used Sanford-Burnham's high-throughput screening capabilities to search a collection of known drugs for those that alter the body's ability to generate insulin, the pancreatic hormone that helps regulate glucose. That's when they first noticed that many antipsychotics alter the activity of the insulin gene. In this current study, the researchers set out to connect the dots between antipsychotics and insulin. In doing so, experiments in laboratory cell-lines showed that antipsychotics known to cause metabolic side effects also activated the TGFbeta pathway?a mechanism that controls many cellular functions, including the production of insulin?while the drugs without these side effects did not.

Wondering whether their initial laboratory observations were relevant to the human experience, the researchers reanalyzed previously published gene expression patterns in brain tissue from schizophrenic patients treated with antipsychotics. What they found supported their earlier findings?TGFbeta signaling was activated only in those patients receiving antipsychotic treatment. Looking further, they found that the extent to which each antipsychotic drug activated the TGFbeta pathway in human brains correlated very closely with the extent to which those same drugs activated SMAD3 and affected the insulin promoter in their cell culture experiments.

The TGFbeta pathway also plays an important role in metabolic disease in people who don't take antipsychotic medications. "It's known that people who have elevated TGFbeta levels are more prone to diabetes. So having a dysregulated TGFbeta pathway?whether caused by antipsychotics or through some other mechanism?is clearly a very bad thing," said Dr. Levine. "The fact that antipsychotics activate this pathway should be a big concern to pharmaceutical companies. We hope this new information will lead to the development of improved drugs."

(AP) ? Facebook is updating its status from a private to public company. The shift is occurring as the Internet social network filed its long-awaited plans for an initial public offering of stock.

The documents filed Wednesday say Facebook hopes to raise $5 billion in its IPO. That would be the most for an Internet IPO since Google and its early backers raised $1.9 billion in 2004.

The final amount is likely to change during the next three to four months as Facebook's bankers gauge investor demand.

The IPO marks another major milestone for a Harvard-born startup that began as an online college hangout eight years ago. Since then, it has become a cultural touchstone that has transformed the way everyone from doting grandmas to sassy teenagers share information about their lives.

Solving Crime With Computer Forensics | Cyber Law

Laptop or computer Forensics is the scientific study of computers or laptop or computer related information in relation to an investigation by a law enforcement agency for use in a court of law. Although this technologies may be as old as computers themselves, the advances in technologies are consistently revising this science.

In the technological old days, laptop or computer forensics was mostly related to information dumps, printing out every keystroke that had been logged on a laptop or computer in a series of eight digits, all of them zeroes and ones. Literally circumstances of paper would be employed for the printing of the materials. Systems analysts would then have to convert all of the data into hex and then translate the value into whatever the actual keystroke was. In this way, it was feasible to go over all of the information and figure out at what point the laptop or computer and the corresponding program crashed. Like computers and technology, Laptop or computer forensics has evolved by leaps and bounds given that those days of old.

Although all computer language still ultimately boils down to ones and zeroes or binary and then hex, the indicates by which programs are developed, run and utilized has changed drastically. This new science has accomplished well to keep up with the task at hand. Now challenging drives can be wiped clean. Nonetheless, without having an unconditional format (and in rare circumstances, even with the unconditional switch) the information can still be retrieved. It takes an expert in laptop or computer forensics nevertheless. It takes an individual who is familiar with the technology of the pc to reconstruct all of the data that has been wiped off of the hard drive.

Computer forensics can be utilised to track emails, instant messaging and just about any other form of laptop or computer related communications. This can be required, particularly in the world right now. Specialists have even advanced the technology to the point that they can track data real time, or even though it is actually becoming sent and received. This is a mind-numbing job when you feel about the billions of communications going on around the globe at any given time, but the science of personal computer forensics is continuously advancing each bit as swiftly or often even quicker than the technologies they are responsible for investigating.

It is an intriguing aspect of technologies that is typically overlooked. Pc forensics have been used to solve several crimes and ought to be considered a viable tool in several approaches and the study of this subject is constantly growing along with technologies.

KC Woman Drives 600 Miles to Return Lost Dog | fox4kc.com ...

MERRIAM, Kan. ?Twelve hundred miles from home ? a one-year-old Lab/Pit mix dog found in Merriam, Kansas will be returning home.

The one-year-old Lab/Pit mix dog whose family lives in Butte, Mont., was found thanks to a microchip embedded in the dog. And a volunteer has offered to drive Grizz the dog home.

The Heartland Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals Lost Pet and Intake Center accepted Grizz on Wed., Jan 25.

Using standard procedures, the center scanned Grizz for microchip identification and discovered contact information on his owners.

Apparently, someone in Butte, Mont., thought Grizz was a stray and picked him up during a road trip from Seattle to Texas, dropping him off in Kansas at the Heartland SPCA. When the Heartland SPCA contacted the owner, the owner was stunned that Grizz was still alive and well.

?He was very excited but he was also in disbelief that his dog was found all the way over here in Kansas,? said Wendy Blair with the SPCA.

The story gets even better.

Kathy Thies, a longtime Heartland SPCA volunteer, volunteered to drive Grizz half-way home, which amounts to a 600 mile trip to Cheyenne, Wyo.

?Really it all comes down to what goes around, comes around,? Thies said. ?I hope there?s good karma!?

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and Joe Hinkle with the SPCA says it?s the only reason Grizz is coming home.

?If not for the microchip, we would?ve never been able to find the owner,? Hinkle said. ?The microchip was the only way that we were able to get Grizz home.?
