Rango co-writer Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian have been happed to pen the script for Fraggle Rock, New Regency?s big-screen adaptation of the 1980s musical puppet series created by Jim Henson.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Moving to Rio, I had visions of paradise, of a sprawling apartment with panoramic views over a palm-lined beach.

Instead, I found myself plunged into the inferno of one of the hottest real estate markets in the world.

Brazil's burgeoning middle class is moving up in the world, into fancier high-rises. The discovery of vast oil deposits off the coast has flooded the city with renters carrying fistfuls of petrodollars. And property owners already are hiking rents in anticipation of Rio's upcoming mega-events, the 2014 soccer World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Property prices in some neighborhoods have risen sixfold in the past decade and now rival those in cities such as New York or Paris. I was moving from Paris and had previously lived in New York, so I thought I knew a little something about finding a place in notoriously difficult rental markets.

Hubris. It'll get you every time.

Armed with the Sunday classifieds, I launched what was to become my epic quest for an apartment back in January. I went first to Rio's showcase neighborhoods: tony, seaside Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, the ones everyone imagines when they think of fabulous Rio. Perusing the ads, however, it seemed as if an extra zero had been tacked onto the price of every apartment. A studio with a shared toilet on the landing for $1,000 a month? Or $2,750 for a 400-square-foot (37-square-meter), one-bedroom on the first floor, apparently with no natural light? Could I be reading this right?

Unfortunately, I was. For the rent I used to pay on my Paris penthouse looking out onto the Eiffel Tower, I found I could get a postage stamp-sized place on the third floor of a down-at-the-heels Ipanema building with a spectacular view ? into the neighbor's bathroom.

These neighborhoods had become the favorite haunt of the expat crowd ? deep-pocketed executives from foreign oil companies, banks, car manufacturers, cosmetics giants and other multinationals eager to get in on the booming Brazilian market. With the number of foreign workers in Brazil up some 60 percent over the past four years, demand for seaside digs had exploded.

Priced off the beach, I focused my search instead on the stately neighborhoods of Flamengo and Botafogo on picturesque Guanabara Bay. Their beaches are too polluted for swimming, but at least I'd have a view of the sea, I thought.

Again, I made the rounds with classifieds in hand. About two-thirds of the time, real estate agents didn't even bother to turn up for our scheduled appointments. When they did show, a quick peek through the open door frequently sufficed: A two-bedroom in which neither bedroom was large enough to fit a bed. ("Sleep on a mat," the agent helpfully suggested.) A "loft" overlooking an eight-lane highway that was so loud it felt like it sat in the median.

My search stretched from weeks into months. I couch-surfed for weeks, shedding more of my belongings with each subsequent move ? including my cat, whose jittery nerves required pet anti-depressants.

Rio's property boom is a reversal of fortune for a city that had been in steep decline since 1960, when Brazil moved its capital from the Marvelous City to the red-dirt plateau of Brasilia, and businesses fled to industrial Sao Paulo.

Now, the question on everyone's lips is whether the city's spiraling real estate prices are a bubble, like the one that burst in the U.S. in 2008, or a response to increased demand in a city surrounded by mountains and the sea with no room to grow. But even if the bubble were to burst, surely it would be after the 2016 Olympics, and I needed a place to live immediately.

As my desperation spiraled, the advice came pouring in from other expats who'd also been through the Rio housing crunch. "Find a street you like and go ask the doormen if there's a vacancy coming up," well-meaning friends counseled. Several sweat-drenched days going door-to-door under the scorching summer sun yielded nothing but shaking heads.

"This is Rio. You've got to lower your standards. And raise your budget," was another frequent piece of advice.

But even with my newly minted standards, I found precious few places within my price range that were safe, sanitary and could fit a bed in the bedroom. Of the 70 places I looked at, I ended up applying for just four. Three of my applications were rejected out of hand because I didn't have a guarantor who lived up to the owners' now-stringent standards in a competitive market. Whereas in years past they would have almost certainly been willing to accept a multinational company, many owners now demand the guarantor be the owner of not one but two properties in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

For a foreigner parachuting into the country, it was an impossible demand.

"Don't worry," the real estate agents cooed, as the tears welled in my eyes. "We'll find a solution."

In the end, that meant paying an insurance company the equivalent of nearly two months' rent to act as a cosigner, or roughly an extra $4,000 annually.

And it meant paying a hefty "finder's fee" to help convince the landlady to choose me out of the long list of potential renters for the fourth and final apartment I bid on.

The apartment is old, with rusty pipes and possibly faulty electric wiring, and rent is a third more than I'd wanted to pay. But outside my bedroom window, palm trees shake in the breeze and the squawks from a flock of wild parrots echo through my apartment. Each time I leave my building, I'm greeted by the picture postcard sight of Sugarloaf Mountain and the Guanabara Bay, the expanse of its azure waters glinting warmly.

Finally, I'm home.

My name is Lois Knapton and I am the Special Education Director in Derby Public Schools.

I am privileged to have an opportunity to go live for three months in Nairobi, Africa and share my special education knowledge base with a country that does not even acknowledge disabilities or have any laws regarding them.
My job here in America is to advocate for students with disabilities, assuring they get the education they deserve.?

?In Kenya, if you are disabled, you are lucky to stay alive. I will be spend three months working alongside staff and students of a private school called Missions of Hope.?

?? It was founded in 2000 by Mary Kamau. She had a dream of building a school in the largest slum in Africa, the Mathare Valley. It is three miles long and one- half mile wide and houses over one million people. There is no sewer and no running water.
?Until? you have witnessed this kind of poverty firsthand,? you simply cannot imagine it. No words describe it.? But there is hope.... The school started with 50 children and has grown to more than 7,000.
??????? So how did I get this opportunity?? I went a missions trip with 24 other educators, last summer, with my church from New Haven. I loved it so much, I wanted to go back. When Missions of Hope called and asked me to come back, I was elated.? But this time I am going alone. I'll have support when I get there.

According to an analysis of data from the University of Michigan done by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, poverty rates have increased every year since 2005 for older Americans and are worst among the oldest of the elderly. In 2009, 15 percent of Americans over the age of 85 were living in poverty and 6.0 percent of them fell into poverty after turning 85. The data suggests people are spending their retirement savings too quickly and falling into poverty as they grow older. Sudipto Banerjee, EBRI research associate and author of the report, said, as people age, their personal savings and pension account balances are depleted and their medical expenses increase. The study found that people living in poverty were far more likely to be suffering from health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes than people living above the poverty line. Marine scientists studying life around deep-sea vents have discovered that some hardy species can survive the extreme change in pressure that occurs when a research submersible rises to the surface. The team's findings, published in Conservation Biology, reveal how a species can be inadvertently carried by submersibles to new areas, with potentially damaging effects on marine ecosystems.

After using the manned submersible Alvin to collect samples of species from the Juan de Fuca Ridge under the northeastern Pacific Ocean, the team discovered 38 deep-sea limpets ( Lepetodrilus gordensis) among their sample. Intriguingly this species is believed to occur only in the vents of the Gorda Ridge, which are 635 km south of the dive site.

"The big question was, how did they get over 600 kilometers from their habitat?" said Dr. Janet Voight, from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. "We discovered that the individuals must have been transported from the Gorda Ridge by our submersible. Even though we clean the submersibles after sampling we had assumed that the extreme pressure change would kill any species which are missed."

The introduction of new species to an ecosystem by humans, often inadvertently, is a big challenge to conservation. How a new species will react to new surroundings, and the effect it can have, is unpredictable. Increases in deep-sea drilling and submersible activity can increase the probability of introductions, but until now hydrothermal vents have been considered too extreme and too isolated to be a source of introduced species.

In coastal environments one of the biggest threats posed by invasive species to native species is disease, as newly introduced pathogens and parasites can cause mass mortality. Diseases that may exist in the extreme environments created by hydrothermal vents have not been well studied.

"We've discovered that it is possible to accidently introduce a species, and any potential diseases it may carry, from a deep-sea vent to a new location," concluded Voight. "This has implications for the future exploration of hydrothermal vents as it reveals the potential risk of human driven change to the ecosystem."

Nations to share giant telescope

South Africa, Australia and New Zealand will host the biggest radio telescope ever built.

The nations belonging to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) organisation took the decision at a meeting on Friday.

The 1.5bn-euro (?1.2bn) SKA's huge fields of antennas will sweep the sky for answers to the major outstanding questions in astronomy.

They will probe the early Universe, test Einstein's theory of gravity and even search for alien intelligent life.

The project aims to produce a radio telescope with a combined collecting area of one million square metres - equivalent to about 200 football pitches.

To do this, it will have to combine the signals received by thousands of small antennas spread over thousands of kilometres.

South Africa and Australasia had put forward separate, competing bids, and the early indications had been that there would be one outright winner.

This decision will help to change the perception that Africa is a dark continent full of death and destruction and where little scientific research is carried out.

The telescope will deliver thousands of jobs and will showcase South Africa's rich history in astronomy.

The SKA will have 3,000 antennas across a vast semi-desert part of South Africa known as the Karoo. The site is already home to seven massive Gregorian dish antennas that form part of the Karoo Array Telescope, or Kat7.

South Africa is also pressing ahead with a 64-dish project, Meerkat, which is a precursor to SKA.

Professor Justin Jonas, a director of the SKA project in South Africa, says hosting two-thirds of the telescope still means hosting the largest telescope in the world.

But the SKA organisation decided both proposals should contribute something to the final design of the telescope.

"We have decided on a dual site approach," said SKA board chairman Prof John Womersley.

He was speaking at a news conference held at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport following a meeting of the organisation's members in the Dutch capital.

The decision to use two sites will undoubtedly increase the cost and complexity of the SKA.

Its targets will be radio sources in the sky that radiate at centimetre to metre wavelengths.

These include the clouds of hydrogen gas in the infant Universe that collapsed to form the very first stars and galaxies.

The SKA will map precisely the positions of the nearest billion galaxies. The structure they trace on the cosmos should reveal new details about "dark energy", the mysterious negative pressure that appears to be pushing the Universe apart at an ever-increasing speed.

The telescope will also detail the influence of magnetic fields on the development of stars and galaxies. And it will zoom in on pulsars, the dead stars that emit beams of radio waves that sweep across the Earth like super-accurate time signals.

Astronomers believe these dense objects may hold the key to a more complete theory of gravity than that proposed by Einstein.

Different strengths

The Australasian bid was centred on a site at Boolardy Station, about 500km (310 miles) north of Perth in Western Australia. For South Africa, the central location put forward was in the Karoo in the Northern Cape, about 95km from Carnarvon.

Both have exceptional conditions for radio astronomy in that, being remote territories, they experience very little stray interference from cellular phone networks and TV broadcasts.

And Australia and South Africa had even started building precursor facilities which they hoped would enhance their bids' attractiveness.

Both these pathfinders, known as ASKAP (Australia) and Meerkat (South Africa), will now be incorporated into the early development of the network.

Most of the subsequent telescope dishes and mid-frequency aperture arrays will then be built in southern Africa (sites will include Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, and even out into the Indian Ocean in Mauritius and Madagascar) - the bulk of the SKA.

The low-frequency aperture array antennas will be positioned in Australia.

Prof Bryan Gaensler, from Sydney University and a former project scientist on the SKA, commented: "What the SKA project has decided is to put different technologies in different places, playing to the strengths of each site."

And Prof Womersley told BBC News: "The important aspect of doing it this way is that we will get more science out of the project in the first phase by taking advantage of the existing ASKAP and Meerkat investments. So, while there'll be some additional operating costs associated with this implementation, we will get more science in return."

Dr Bernie Fanaroff, the SKA South Africa project director, expressed his delight at the news.

"I think it's wonderful," he said.

"It means that for the first time in our history, Africa will be the host to the world's largest scientific instrument. And it shows a great deal of faith by the rest of the world in our ability and our capacity to both build and operate such a sophisticated instrument. It also reflects the recognition in Africa of how important science and technology is to our future."

Long game

The SKA's members include the UK, Netherlands, Italy, China, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. India has associate member status.

There will be major industrial return for all members. The next project engineering phase is worth about 90m euros.

Phase 1 of the project, due to start in 2015/16, was valued at around 360m euros. The cost of the last phase was always uncertain and depended on knowing exactly where the SKA would be built and the final design it would take; but a sum of 1.5bn euros was considered a likely figure.

"This a long programme," said Dr Fanaroff.

"The construction phase alone will last from about 2013 to 2025. So, there's direct spin-off from construction, and there's the creation of employment through operations and maintenance that will go on for about 50 years.

"But there's also the less tangible - but more important in my view - economic aspect, which is the development of our capabilities in very hi-tech sectors, and the ability of our universities to attract large numbers of the best young people into science and engineering," he told BBC News.

This is the first piece in a three-part series.

Somewhere in Eastern Cape, South Africa, one fateful morning, wildlife veterinarian Dr. William Fowlds received a call from Kariega Game Reserve. One of their rhinos had been poached. Fowlds recalls, "I expressed my heartfelt remorse and said I would be there later in the morning." There was a silent pause before the sledgehammer: "William, he is still alive!"

Dr. Fowlds did not hesitate. Thirty minutes later he found himself confronted with an animal, hardly recognizable as a rhino. His profile was completely changed by the absence of those iconic horns. The skull and soft tissue trauma extended down into the remnants of his face. Initially he stood on three legs with his mouth on the ground. Then he lifted his head up, revealing pieces of loose flesh that hung semi-detached from his deformed and bloodied face. Dr. Fowlds' vet report goes on.

Not all poached rhinos are tortured in this way. Many of them simply get shot with AK-47s. But many actually get immobilized with veterinary drugs before having their horns and underlying bones hacked off. In many cases, though, the amount of used drugs does not kill the rhino. If they don't bleed to death, they wake up under circumstances we don't want to imagine. Why does all this happen, at a rate that threatens the species with extinction -- once again? Because the rhinoceros' horn, despite containing nothing more interesting than plain carotene, similar to our finger nails, is worth more than gold, or even cocaine. Today you can buy a rhino horn on auction for about $35,800. Tomorrow you can sell the horn for about $179,200. In market language it translates into a rhino having a higher value dead than alive.

And indeed, the market is the crux of the matter. After a skyrocketing increase in illegally killed rhinos in South Africa over the last four years, the record was reached in 2011, with 448 animals falling victim poachers. Many of them were caught in the presumably protected Kruger National Park. In Vietnam, where the black market is booming, rhinos themselves run no risk, because there are none left. The last Javan rhinoceros in Vietnam was poached and killed April 2010. Why? Because in traditional Asian medicine the powdered horn is in demand for illnesses like malaria, epilepsy, poisoning, and abscesses. Ancient Chinese medicine texts recommended the horn for curing fever and arthritis. A few years ago in Vietnam, rumors started to circulate that some political VIP had been cured of cancer by using rhino-horn powder. Traditional Asian medicine had never suggested rhino horns as a cure for cancer, but now wealthy customers started to queue up.

Despite a 1993 ban on international trade in rhino horns by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), rhinos more or less disappeared from all over Africa, except South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Now, it seems, the rhino is in for its final battle in these remaining countries. What we are up against? Exploiting of legal hunting as a way of laundering money; corrupt, complicit officials; unlicensed ivory-processing factories, rhino "farms" posing as safari parks; etc. Even Vietnamese government officials have participated in the illicit and lucrative trade. The rhino horn trade has developed into fully fledged, worldwide crime syndicates, and animals are not the only casualties.
