(AP) ? Military prosecutors planned to go face-to-face for the first time Friday with an Army private charged with sending hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was to appear on the witness stand again, the fourth day of a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade, Md.

He testified Thursday in support of a defense motion claiming his confinement for nine months at a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., was so harsh that his case should be dismissed.

Manning, speaking publicly Thursday for the first time since his May 2010 arrest, said he got so used to leg irons and being locked up 23 hours a day that when he was finally transferred to medium-security confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in April 2011, he felt uneasy moving freely around the cell block.

"There was the sense of, 'OK, I know they're going to put the hammer down on me soon,'" Manning said near the end of his five hours on the witness stand.

Besides being classified "maximum custody," Manning was subjected to additional restraints during his nine months at Quantico because he was either on suicide watch or considered at risk of hurting himself or others. Commanders maintained the extra restrictions despite repeated recommendations by brig psychiatrists that they be eased. They included scratchy, suicide-prevention bedding and sometimes having all his clothing, eyeglasses and reading material removed from his cell.

The military contends the treatment was proper.

Manning testified that he angered brig commander Chief Warrant Officer 2 Denise Barnes when he vented his frustration.

"There was a word, I think it was 'absurd,'" he said. "That was my opinion of how I see the restrictions at that point."

Manning said he got frustrated spending up to 23 hours a day in a windowless, 6-by-8-foot cell.

"It was pretty draining," Manning said under questioning by defense attorney David Coombs.

At one point during his testimony, Manning donned a dark-green, suicide-prevention smock resembling an oversized tank top made of stiff, thick fabric. He said it was similar to one he was issued in March 2011, several days after Quantico jailers started requiring him to surrender all his clothing and eyeglasses each night as a suicide-prevention measure. This occurred after he told them ? out of frustration, he said ? that if he really wanted to hurt himself, he could have done so with his underwear waistband or flip-flops.

Before receiving the smock, he was forced to stand naked at attention one morning for a prisoner count, he said.

"I had no socks, no underwear, I had no articles of clothing, I had no glasses," he said.

The 5-foot-3 soldier looked youthful in his dark-blue dress uniform, close-cropped hair and rimless eyeglasses. He was animated, often speaking in emphatic bursts, swiveling in the witness chair and gesturing with his hands.

Manning was polite throughout his testimony, referring to his attorney as "sir" and making frequent eye contact with Coombs and the judge. Only after watching two videos of himself speaking to his guards while wearing only his boxers ? the first video shows him surrendering his clothes ? did his voice waver.

"It brings that back, the fact that I was there," Manning said of the video.

Earlier Thursday, the military judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, accepted the terms under which Manning may plead guilty to eight of the 22 charges he faces. Coombs revealed the plea offer in early November, saying it would enable Manning to take responsibility for sending U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks.

Lind hasn't formally accepted the pleas but has indicated she will consider them at a hearing starting Dec. 10.

Under the offer, Manning would plead guilty to certain charges as violations of military regulations rather than as violations of federal espionage and computer security laws. The offenses would then carry maximum prison terms totaling 16 years rather than 72.

The pleas would include admissions that Manning sent WikiLeaks classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

The government could still prosecute Manning for all 22 counts he faces, including aiding the enemy. That offense carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Missouri couple claims half of record Powerball jackpot

DEARBORN, Mo. (AP) ? A 52-year-old Missouri mechanic and his wife claimed their share Friday of the record $588 million Powerball jackpot.

Lottery officials sent a statement Friday announcing that Mark and Cindy Hill, of Dearborn, held one of two winning tickets for the nation's biggest Powerball jackpot.

The Hills will split the $588 million prize with whoever holds a winning ticket sold at a convenience store in suburban Phoenix. No one has come forward yet with the Arizona ticket, lottery officials said.

The $587.5 million payout, which represents the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history, set off a nationwide buying frenzy, with tickets at one point selling at nearly 130,000 per minute. Before Wednesday's winners, the jackpot had rolled over 16 consecutive times without someone hitting the jackpot.

Lottery officials' announcement that the Hills had won only confirmed what many residents in Dearborn, a town of about 500 about 40 miles north of Kansas City, already knew. Lottery officials said Thursday that one winning ticket had been sold at a Trex Mart gas station and convenience store on the edge of town, and Mark Hill's name circulated quickly. While he and his wife did not speak to reporters, friends and relatives identified Mark Hill as the winner.

Myron Anderson, pastor of the Baptist Church in nearby Camden Point, said he heard Thursday that the Hills had won the huge lottery prize. Anderson said he has known Mark Hill since they attended high school together and that the couple have older children and a younger elementary school-age daughter.

"He's a really nice guy, and I know his wife, and they have this nice little adopted daughter that they went out of their way to adopt," Anderson said. Funeral services for Hill's father were at the Baptist church, but the family attends church elsewhere, he said.

"I hope it's good news for them," Anderson said. "I've heard awful horror stories about people who get all that money in their lap and how everybody treats them, and if you don't mind me saying, I mean just the fact that the press is going to be after them."

Kevin Bryan, a lifelong Dearborn resident, said the only other local lottery winner he could remember was a farmer who won about $100,000 in scratch-off game years ago "and bought himself a combine."

The winning ticket sold in Arizona was purchased at a 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills near Phoenix, state lottery officials said.

In a Mega Millions drawing in March, three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot, the largest lottery payout of all time.

Hill and the holder of the Arizona winning ticket have numerous decisions ahead, including how to accept their new wealth. The cash payout from the overall jackpot has been estimated at about $385 million, or about $192.5 million for each ticket. The winners can take their jackpots in lump sums or annual payments.

Kurt Vonnegut?s Rules for Reading Fiction

Kurt Vonnegut. Kurt Vonnegut.?

Buck Squibb.

Suzanne McConnell, one of Kurt Vonnegut?s students in his ?Form of Fiction? course at the Iowa Writers? Workshop, saved this assignment, explaining that Vonnegut ?wrote his course assignments in the form of letters, as a way of speaking personally to each member of the class.? The result is part assignment, part letter, part guide to writing and life.

This assignment is reprinted from Kurt Vonnegut: Letters, edited by Dan Wakefield, out now from Delacorte Press.

FORM OF FICTION TERM PAPER ASSIGNMENT

This course began as Form and Theory of Fiction, became Form of Fiction, then Form and Texture of Fiction, then Surface Criticism, or How to Talk out of the Corner of Your Mouth Like a Real Tough Pro. It will probably be Animal Husbandry 108 by the time Black February rolls around. As was said to me years ago by a dear, dear friend, ?Keep your hat on. We may end up miles from here.?

As for your term papers, I should like them to be both cynical and religious. I want you to adore the Universe, to be easily delighted, but to be prompt as well with impatience with those artists who offend your own deep notions of what the Universe is or should be. ?This above all ...?

I invite you to read the fifteen tales in Masters of the Modern Short Story (W. Havighurst, editor, 1955, Harcourt, Brace, $14.95 in paperback). Read them for pleasure and satisfaction, beginning each as though, only seven minutes before, you had swallowed two ounces of very good booze. ?Except ye be as little children ...?

Then reproduce on a single sheet of clean, white paper the table of contents of the book, omitting the page numbers, and substituting for each number a grade from A to F. The grades should be childishly selfish and impudent measures of your own joy or lack of it. I don?t care what grades you give. I do insist that you like some stories better than others.

Proceed next to the hallucination that you are a minor but useful editor on a good literary magazine not connected with a university. Take three stories that please you most and three that please you least, six in all, and pretend that they have been offered for publication. Write a report on each to be submitted to a wise, respected, witty and world-weary superior.

Do not do so as an academic critic, nor as a person drunk on art, nor as a barbarian in the literary market place. Do so as a sensitive person who has a few practical hunches about how stories can succeed or fail. Praise or damn as you please, but do so rather flatly, pragmatically, with cunning attention to annoying or gratifying details. Be yourself. Be unique. Be a good editor. The Universe needs more good editors, God knows.

Since there are eighty of you, and since I do not wish to go blind or kill somebody, about twenty pages from each of you should do neatly. Do not bubble. Do not spin your wheels. Use words I know.

Proteins that work at the ends of DNA could provide cancer insight

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? New insights into a protein complex that regulates the very tips of chromosomes could improve methods of screening anti-cancer drugs.

Led by bioengineering professor Sua Myong, the research group's findings are published in the journal Structure.

Myong's group focused on understanding the proteins that protect and regulate telomeres, segments of repeating DNA units that cap the ends of chromosomes. Telomeres protect the important gene-coding sections of DNA from loss or damage, the genetic equivalent of aglets -- the covering at the tips of shoelaces that keep the ends of the laces from unraveling or fraying.

Telomeres play an important role in cell aging and death, since each time a cell divides, a little bit is lost from the end of the telomere. Thus, cell biologists postulate that telomere length can determine the lifespan of a cell. Cancer cells, however, have a way to get around this limitation: An enzyme called telomerase that adds length to telomeres is highly active in cancer cells. This allows cancer cells to divide in perpetuity, running amok through tissues and systems.

"Cancer researchers want to get a hold of this problem, control this indefinite lengthening of the telomeres," said Myong, who also is affiliated with the Institute for Genomic Biology at the U. of I. "A lot of the anti-cancer drugs are targeted directly to these telomeres so that they can inhibit telomerase activity. The proteins we study regulate the activity of telomerase."

Using a technique developed at Illinois that allows researchers to watch single molecules interact in real time, Myong's group determined how two proteins called POT-1 and TTP-1 bind to the telomere. POT-1 protects the fragile telomere ends from being attacked by other regulatory proteins that might mistake the end for a broken or damaged area of DNA. When POT-1 and TTP-1 work together in a complex, they promote telomerase activity, an interesting target for cancer researchers.

The group found that on its own, POT-1 binds to the folded-up telomere in distinct steps at particular points in the telomere's DNA sequence, unfolding the telomere in a stepwise manner. However, the POT-1/TTP-1 complex surprised the researchers by binding, then freely sliding back and forth along the telomere end.

"Instead of stepwise binding, what we saw was a mobile protein complex, a dynamic sliding motion," Myong said. "Somehow it was as if the static binding activity of POT-1 is completely lost -- the protein complex just slid back and forth. We were able to reproduce the data and confirm it with many different tail lengths of the telomeric DNA and we know now that the contact between POT-1 and the telomere is somehow altered when the partner protein comes and binds."

Next, the researchers will add telomerase and see how the sliding activity of the POT-1/TTP-1 complex affects telomerase activity. Myong postulates that the sliding may promote telomerase activity -- and thus telomere lengthening -- by making the end of the telomere accessible for the telomerase enzyme to bind.

"We are excited about the possibility that this kind of mobility can increase the telomerase extension activity," Myong said. "It's somehow engaging the enzyme so that it can stay bound to the DNA longer. So it must involve a direct interaction."

Ultimately, understanding the POT-1/TTP-1 complex gives drug developers a new target for anti-cancer drugs, and the assay Myong's group used to monitor the complex could offer a venue for evaluating telomere-targeting drugs.

"We want to extend our a basic science knowledge in telomere biology into causes of cancer and we hope that our assay can be useful for telomere-targeted drug screening," Myong said.

The American Cancer Society and the Human Frontier Science Research Program supported this work.

Study contends Grand Canyon as old as dinosaur era

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The awe-inspiring Grand Canyon was probably carved about 70 million years ago, much earlier than thought, a provocative new study suggests ? so early that dinosaurs might have roamed near this natural wonder.

Using a new dating tool, a team of scientists came up with a different age for the gorge's western section, challenging conventional wisdom that much of the canyon was scoured by the mighty Colorado River in the last 5 million to 6 million years.

Not everyone is convinced with the latest viewpoint published online Thursday in the journal Science. Critics contend the study ignores a mountain of evidence pointing to a geologically young landscape and they have doubts about the technique used to date it.

The notion that the Grand Canyon existed during the dinosaur era is "ludicrous," said geologist Karl Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

How the Grand Canyon became grand ? with its vertical cliffs and flat plateaus ? has been debated since John Wesley Powell navigated the whitewater rapids and scouted the sheer walls during his famous 1869 expedition.

Some 5 million tourists flock to Arizona each year to marvel at the 277-mile-long chasm, which plunges a mile deep in some places. It's a geologic layer cake with the most recent rock formations near the rim stacked on top of older rocks that date back 2 billion years.

Though the exposed rocks are ancient, most scientists believe the Grand Canyon itself was forged in the recent geologic past, created when tectonic forces uplifted the land that the Colorado River later carved through.

The new work by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and California Institute of Technology argued that canyon-cutting occurred long before that. They focused on the western end of the Grand Canyon occupied today by the Hualapai Reservation, which owns the Skywalk attraction, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends from the canyon's edge.

To come up with the age, the team crushed rocks collected from the bottom of the canyon to analyze a rare type of mineral called apatite. The mineral contains traces of radioactive elements that release helium during decay, allowing researchers to calculate the passage of time since the canyon eroded.

Their interpretation: The western Grand Canyon is 70 million years old and was likely shaped by an ancient river that coursed in the opposite direction of the west-flowing Colorado.

Lead researcher Rebecca Flowers of the University of Colorado Boulder realizes not everyone will accept this alternative view, which minimizes the role of the Colorado River.

"Arguments will continue over the age of Grand Canyon, and I hope our study will stimulate more work to decipher the mysteries," Flowers said in an email.

It's not the first time that Flowers has dug up evidence for an older Grand Canyon. In 2008, she authored a study that suggested part of the eastern Grand Canyon, where most tourists go, formed 55 million years ago. Another study published that same year by a different group of researchers put the age of the western section at 17 million years old.

If the Grand Canyon truly existed before dinosaurs became extinct, it would have looked vastly different because the climate back then was more tropical. Dinosaurs that patrolled the American West then included smaller tyrannosaurs, horned and dome-headed dinosaurs and duckbills.

If they peered over the rim, it would not look like "the starkly beautiful desert of today, but an environment with more lush vegetation," said University of Maryland paleontologist Thomas Holtz.

Many scientists find it hard to imagine an ancient Grand Canyon since the oldest gravel and sediment that washed downstream date to about 6 million years ago and there are no signs of older deposits. And while they welcome advanced dating methods to decipher the canyon's age, Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico does not think the latest effort is very accurate.

Karlstrom said it also defies logic that a fully formed canyon would sit unchanged for tens of millions of years without undergoing further erosion.

Geologist Richard Young of the State University of New York at Geneseo said his own work suggests there was a cliff in the place of the ancient Grand Canyon.

Flowers "wants to have a canyon there. I want to have a cliff there. Obviously, one of us can't be right," he said.

Whatever the age, there may be a middle ground, said Utah State University geologist Joel Pederson.

Researchers have long known about older canyons in the region cut by rivers that flow in a different direction than the Colorado River. It's possible that a good portion of the Grand Canyon was chiseled long ago by these smaller rivers and then the Colorado came along and finished the job, he said.

Microsoft CEO defends its innovation record, financial results

BELLEVUE, Washington (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer defended his company's record on innovation and financial performance at the annual shareholders' meeting, but conceded that he should have moved faster to get into the booming tablet market dominated by Apple Inc's iPad.

Bill Gates, co-founder and now chairman of the world's largest software company, was one of the first to champion tablet-sized devices more than 10 years ago, but Microsoft failed to come up with a product that worked as well as the iPad. Gates was silent throughout the meeting, attended by about 450 shareholders.

"We're innovating on the seam between software and hardware," said Ballmer, asked why his company had fallen behind rival Apple. "Maybe we should have done that earlier."

A month ago, Microsoft launched the Surface tablet - its first own-brand computer - but has not revealed sales figures.

In the tablet market, "we see nothing but a sea of upside," Ballmer said, an acknowledgement that until now Microsoft has effectively had zero presence in the tablet market.

"I feel pretty good about our level of innovation," he added.

Ballmer said smartphones running Microsoft's new Windows software were selling four times as much as they did at this time last year. Microsoft has never given sales numbers of Windows phones, primarily made by Nokia, Samsung and HTC.

Windows currently has 2 to 4 percent of the global smartphone market, according to various independent data providers. Its overall market share will not likely grow in proportion to its own sales, given that sales of other smartphones - mostly running Google's Android system - are also growing quickly.

Ballmer, flanked by Gates and Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein, was asked by several shareholders to explain Microsoft's lackluster share price, which has been stuck for a decade, and has been outperformed by Apple and Google Inc stock in recent years.

"I understand your comment," he told one shareholder. He went on to explain that Microsoft had "done a phenomenal job of driving product volumes" and was focusing on profiting from that growth.

He suggested that whether investors recognized that value at any given time was out of his hands.

"The stock market's kind of a funny thing," he said, adding that Microsoft had handed back $10 billion in dividends and share buybacks to investors in the last fiscal year.

Several shareholders at the meeting in Bellevue, an upscale suburb of Seattle, complimented the executives on how they had grown and managed the company.

Microsoft's shares rose almost 18 percent during fiscal 2012, which ended in June of this year, compared with a 3 percent rise in the Standard & Poor's 500.

Despite such fluctuations, Microsoft's shares stand around the same level they did 10 years ago.

Israel and Palestine must find peace through a democratic government

by: Rose Jones on November 28, 2012

Rory Penman

The cease-fire between Israel and the Gaza government Hamas, recently brokered by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, is a fragile one. The last Israeli offensive ?Cast Lead? four years ago was also during an Israeli/American election cycle.

From Operation Cast Lead until now, the dynamics have changed on the ground, not only in Israel/Palestine but in the region as a whole. The ?two-state solution? is dead, and so is The Palestinian Authority, which was never elected.

Hamas, which was democratically elected, should be given the chance to lead the Palestinian people without a suffocating Israeli presence that causes dangerous rocket resistance against innocent Israeli civilians. Israelis and Palestinians must learn to share all neighborhoods, businesses and any other institutions a democratic society has in common.

That is, the correct path to take from here is to build one state ? democratic, not theocratic ? with equal rights and representation for all who live there. The Palestinian refugees, who were forcefully expelled from their homeland in 1948 and 1967, must be granted their right to return, as is the case with any country in the world.

Jews, Muslims and Christians lived peacefully together in Palestine for centuries before Zionist nationalism divided them, beginning in the 1930s. They can live peacefully together again. In fact, they must ? for the good of the Holy Land and the world in general.

It is paramount Jerusalem remains an autonomist city too ? under collective control from the United Nations. States culturally define the space within their borders. All three major religions worship in Jerusalem, and it would be unsustainable for only one or two of the three to control the holy city.

Arabs and Jews are both Semitic people. Insulting Palestinians is just as anti-Semitic as insulting Jews. Moreover, Palestinians are indigenous to the land, whereas the majority of Israelis are immigrants from Europe, Russia and the United States, and many of those immigrants are converts to Judaism.

It is not possible for anyone who hasn?t physically been in Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and Gaza to wrap their minds around all of the complexities of the region.

I have studied and stayed in the West Bank several times. There is a distinct divide between right and left Jews in Israel. The Israeli right are mostly all white, and they carry banners saying ?death to Arabs? and ?remove? the blacks from Israel. There are tens of thousands of asylum seekers and refugees in Israel who have fled war zones in Eretria, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan.

The Israeli left fights tirelessly for Palestinian rights, which would be the best for Israelis, too. They are loving, generous and courageous people, a flagship of traditional Jewish culture. They have gone to the West Bank and taken Palestinian women and children into Israel to visit their homelands. The Israeli Jewish left has brought hope to Palestinians, something even other Arab countries have failed to do.

There are many violent confrontations between the two Israeli sides, and unfortunately it is getting worse. The Israeli Orthodox Jews fight with the secular Jews. Orthodox Jewish communities maintain the right to segregate men and women in public.

I went to Gaza the first time following the Israeli offensive Cast Lead in 2009. I can?t find words to describe what I saw in Gaza. Even worse, my tax dollars paid for the destruction and carnage.

In the two weeks I was there, I didn?t meet one family that wasn?t affected by the Israeli bombing campaign. Most families had lost at least one family member ? some lost their entire family. Four hundred and sixty-nine children and nearly as many women added to the death toll of 1,483 in three weeks in Gaza. Thirteen Israelis had also been killed, four of them from friendly fire.

The Gaza population of 1.5 million lives in a country smaller than the size of Salt Lake City. Gazans are locked in with nowhere to go to escape the bombing, like they live in an open-air prison. The Israelis have high-tech siren alert systems, shelters and American-funded Iron Dome defense shields against Gaza rockets.

I worked in the Jabalya refugee camp with a medical team from Turkey that was volunteering at the time. I held 3-year-old Muna while they sewed her toes back on with no anesthetic. I watched an 8-month-old Ayman die of his injuries, and listened to a 14-year-old boy say he wanted to be a martyr to avenge the death of his mother and baby brother.

Four years later ? today ? Israel attacked the people of Gaza again, with resistance rockets from Hamas now capable of reaching Tel Aviv. The siege has only strengthened resistance in Gaza, and this time it nearly led to a full-scale regional war, which would have happened had Israel proceeded with a ground invasion.

Hamas has international support, sympathy and dignitaries from all across the world visiting. The Israelis must see that even though Hamas now has weapons much more advanced than they did four years ago, they also have 10 times as much support. The Israeli attacks do nothing more than embolden the resistance.

Netanyahu might get the votes he needs to maintain his prime minister position in Israel, but unless he suits up for a one-state solution soon, Israel could end up on the wrong side of history.

?How My Blog Business Works? Web Strategy Summit Video ...

Last week I presented at the Web Strategy Summit in Brisbane. The organisers of the event, Adam and Toby, invited me to come in and do a short presentation of 18 minutes, then a 10 minute question and answer session.

The event featured panel discussions for about 45 minutes and several 18 minute ?keynotes?, so they could get through plenty of speakers. There were about 100 attendees.

I blame TED talks for popularising the short presentation format. Since I didn?t actually have an 18 minute talk ready to go (my talks are usually an hour long) I had to put something new together. We determined my topic would be -

How I used my Blog and Podcast to grow my audience to 100,000 people and make $1 million online

Over the weekend I decided since I had the slides from the talk that I?d do a recording of my presentation and publish it here on EJ and YouTube. Here is the video and MP3 download ?

The video a highlight reel of the core concepts behind a successful blog. The timeframe for the presentation was a bit restrictive, and given the audience I was talking to I had to tailor it to them. They were marketing professionals working for small businesses mostly, so not my usual crowd of people wanting to quit their job and start an online business.

In the video I talk about -

  • What core message and image I present online
  • What technique is at the heart of my success
  • Which tools I use to grow my audience
  • Two concepts that are especially important to creative individuals online
  • How much of an impact having a personal brand can have

Amid bitter leadership row, French conservatives tap Cop

Jean-Fran?ois Cop? today was named the winner of the conservative UMP party's recount. But rival Fran?ois Fillon begs to differ.

By Bastien Inzaurralde,?Correspondent / November 26, 2012

In this file photo, former French Prime Minister Fran?ois Fillon, left, and French conservative party UMP Secretary General Jean-Fran?ois Cop? pose for photographers before a televised debate last month. The two men have been locked in a contentious fight over leadership of the UMP.

An internal committee investigating the contentious Nov. 18 election for leadership of France's right-wing opposition UMP party has declared a winner, but the struggle between two prominent French conservatives over the UMP's top spot looks set to continue, likely in court.

The party's internal investigation began last week after initial results showed Jean-Fran?ois Cop? with only a 98-vote victory over Fran?ois Fillon. Today, the committee declared Mr. Cop? the UMP's new leader. But while Cop? called for the party to choose "forgiveness instead of division," Mr. Fillon rejected the recount as "illegal."

Fillon was prime minister during former President Nicolas Sarkozy?s tenure and is considered more moderate than Cop?, the current party leader who held a position equivalent to a US House majority leader until June, when the Socialist party and its allies won France's parliamentary elections.

What started as a neck-and-neck election eight days ago between Cop? and Fillon has quickly escalated into a public political war to succeed President Sarkozy as right-wing leader, with both men fiercely criticizing each other and accusing one another of cheating.

Both Fillon and Cop? claimed victory in the election on Nov. 18. But the next day, a UMP commission tasked with overseeing the election declared Cop? the winner by a mere 98 votes, and the tension between the two sides has grown steadily since.

On Wednesday, Fillon?s camp said that votes from three overseas territories hadn?t been counted and claimed that adding them to the vote tally would mean victory for Fillon. In today's announcement, the investigating committee put Cop? ahead by 952 votes after the recount.

An inheritance from Sarkozy?

St?phane Roz?s, a political analyst and the president of Cap, a communications consulting company, says the turmoil within the UMP stems in part from the void left by Mr. Sarkozy after he lost this year?s presidential election to Fran?ois Hollande.

?Nicolas Sarkozy didn?t leave anything that could allow the right wing to structure itself around a body of doctrine, because everything was organized around his person,? Mr. Roz?s says. ?The only thing that remained is a radicalization of the UMP that took [the party] further away from right-wing sympathizers.?

An editorial in the weekend edition of France?s most prestigious newspaper Le Monde argued that Sarkozy was to blame for the current crisis because he took the party too far to the right during the last presidential campaign. At the same time, Le Monde wrote, the UMP has not been able to move on since Sarkozy left power, nor has it engaged in any kind of soul-searching.

?Nicolas Sarkozy is not the big winner of this fratricidal war,? the editorial read. ?He is the cause of it.?

Trading barbs

Regardless of the cause, the debate over the election has led to a toxic atmosphere within the party, with Fillon and Cop? trading barbs publicly.

"The behavior of Fran?ois Fillon, it?s the story of an inelegant loser who now comes to give lessons of morality without applying them to himself,? Cop? told Europe 1 radio on Thursday.

The following day, Fillon had a few words for Cop?. ?I measure all the damages from this crisis, but at the same I want to say that a political party is not a mafia,? Fillon told RTL radio. ?A political party, it?s not a place where you can bury cases, refuse to tell the truth.?

On Sunday morning, Fillon?s team refused to recognize the UMP commission examining allegations of fraud as legitimate. In the evening, mediation between Cop? and Fillon by former French Prime Minister Alain Jupp?, who is considered the party?s moral gatekeeper, proved unsuccessful. The mediation attempt appeared to be a last resort and its failure was met by angry reactions on both sides.

Fillon took to Twitter after the meeting to blame Cop? for the failed talks and announced he would go to court. He tweeted, ?I will go to court to restore the truth of the results and give the party base its voice back.?

Agence France-Presse, relying on anonymous sources, reported that Sarkozy advised Fillon not to go to court when the two met for lunch on Monday. Sarkozy also said it would be better that a new election be held, according to Agence France-Presse.

The Ultimate Bowling Guide : Sports and Recreation ... - Gotted75's ...

You are here: Home / General / The Ultimate Bowling Guide

The Ultimate Bowling GuideThe good news is, there are a few simple "tweaks" any bowler can use to instantly tack on 20, 30, even 50 or more points a game. And it doesn?t take that much effort.

There are five "dirty little secrets" among professional bowlers? secrets that no amateur ever learns on their own? and the pro?s like it that way.

These five "dirty little secrets" are extremely simple to master (once they are revealed to you)? and yet they INSTANTLY allow you (no matter how butt ugly you think your game is right now) to "lock into" your own personal "Perfect Shot". Which means on your very next game, you will:

How can this be? How can you not transform your game? and suddenly ? and I do mean SUDDENLY ? start playing like the top pro?s at their peak?

You see? you ALREADY have the goods when it comes to bowling the best game you?re capable of? just not WHEN IT COUNTS.

You heard right. You?re "blowing your wad" on your PRACTICE THROWS, if you?re like 99% of the amateur bowlers in the world. And you?re leaving your best game behind. And going out on the lanes with the WORST game you have.

If you?re like most bowlers, you like to warm up with a few frames before you start a game, right? At the very least, you get to the lanes every once in a while to "practice". Everyone who takes their game seriously does this. I know I do.

But the pro?s do something DIFFERENT than you do. Unlike you (and every other amateur in the world)?

The Pro Knows How To "Capture" His Best Shot During The Warm-Up? And Bring It With Him To The Game!

Amateurs, on the other hand, LEAVE their best shot behind. Let me explain: There you are on your lane, warming up and testing the lane conditions, launching a fairly-decent hook, getting a strike here and there, maybe missing an occasional spare, setting up again and correcting your lift, launching another pretty damn good shot?

"Locked" That Breathtaking Shot Into His Body, Where He Could Bring It Back At Will, In The Game Where It Would Count The Most!

You, however, blow right past the few perfect shots you throw practicing, not storing them at all, and thus you can?t find them when it counts. Those great shots you launch on the practice lane are lost forever. Even more depressing? there?s a 90% chance the shots you do throw in the game will be among your WORST! Because, you?ve done EVERYTHING WRONG at the warm-up.

And what?s really frustrating is you don?t even know you?re doing it? because these five little secrets are NEVER discovered by amateurs! They?re the secrets that separate the guys who can make a living off the game, and everyone else who can?t buy a break.

And? just like most things that are so simple they get completely overlooked? no one has really understood how these secrets?

The Importance of Editing Film and TV Production - Bobby Bose ...

In fact, the film editor has the job identical to a cook.

The importance of editing dates back ages, chronicled in the book "The Technique Of Film And Video Editing" by Ken Dancyger. It upholds some of the finest examples of editing imparting the narrative of the film through silent shots, music and jump shots involving ordinary objects. Alfred Hitchcock's filmmaking (in films like 'Vertigo' and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much') is considered to have some of the finest editing work by the erstwhile standards, and can easily exemplify why editing is considered so integral to the success of a film or TV production.

In the earlier ages, editing was physically done, with the help of mechanical equipment that sliced, spliced and appropriately put together 'linearly' edited reels. The digital revolution and technological advances like the Firewire have magically simplified the post-production process. With software applications like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Windows Movie Maker, editing is not restricted to professionally trained editors and apprentices. The ease of use and interactive applications has made it possible for film students, amateurs and one-time users to edit their own film or video productions.

The advent of computers has also allowed editors to enhance the creativity of their work. Unlike the mechanical equipment which was used on the original reel and did not warrant a liberal creative license or room for error to the editor, digital editing offers a huge scope for improvisation. The latter has opened up avenues for experimentation, much better treatment and quick editing procedures. Off late, films have been centered on editing and the whole post-production process, rather than the filming of the same. Recent examples can include 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' and 'Avatar', the latter incidentally being the highest revenue-grossing films of all time!

With technology advancing in the speed of light-years, editing in film and TV production has gained a pivotal role. And every filmmaking unit, irrespective of size, style, location or budget, has already acknowledged the same!

Larry Hagman: 'Dallas,' 'I Dream Of Jeannie' And More Of The Late Actor's Best TV Roles (VIDEO)

Larry Hagman: 'Dallas,' 'I Dream Of Jeannie' And More Of The Late Actor's Best TV Roles (VIDEO)
Larry Hagman Dallas

The best of "Dallas" star Larry Hagman.

The late Larry Hagman was best known for his role on "Dallas" -- and for wearing TV's most legendary cowboy hat -- but Hagman was all over the small screen long before the world wondered, "Who shot J.R.?"

Hagman, who died Friday after suffering from cancer, was in the middle of shooting the second season of the "Dallas" reboot on TNT when he passed away.

His cancer almost set back the 2012 incarnation, but Hagman said he wouldn't let that happen. Before its premiere, Hagman told The Huffington Post he was thrilled to be back as the ruthless J.R. Ewing. "Playing a villain is like a license to steal."

In honor of Hagman and his 55-year TV career, take a look through the slideshow below to see him as the master on "I Dream Of Jeannie," to watch him play Jessica Walter's (a.k.a. Lucille Bluth) on-air husband and to find out which "Real Housewife" once played his stepdaughter.

  • "Decoy" (1954)

In his first TV appearance ever, Hagman guest starred on "Decoy," the first American police series with a female protagonist.

  • "Diagnosis: Unknown" (1960)

Hagman appeared on the series premiere of "Diagnosis: Unkwown," which lasted only nine episodes. But it did leave a legacy: Thirty-three years after its cancellation on CBS, the network launched the successful "Diagnosis Murder," starring Dick and Barry Van Dyke, which went on for eight seasons.

  • "Sea Hunt" (1958-1959)

Hagman popped up in three episodes of "Sea Hunt" as three different characters from 1958-1959.

  • "I Dream Of Jeannie" (1965-1970)

Hagman's first major breakout role was as Astronaut Tony Nelson on "I Dream Of Jeannie." In the series debut, Tony opened Jeannie's bottle, becoming her master. By the end of the series, Tony and Jeannie married and in a TV special that took place 15 years after "I Dream Of Jeannie" ended, it was revealed that they had a son named T.J.

  • "Three's A Crowd" (1969)

In this 1969 ABC made-for-TV movie, Hagman starred as a pilot whose wife Jessica (played by "Arrested Development" star Jessica Walter) disappeared and was presumed dead. When she appears seven years later, Hagman's character Jim has met and married Ann (E.J. Peaker). He doesn't tell them about one another and, of course, hilarity ensues.

  • "Here We Go Again" (1973)

This TV comedy, which lasted one season, portrayed two couples in their post-divorce lives. Hagman played Richard, who remarried Susan (Diane Baker), and lives near both his ex-wife and her ex-husband. "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star <a href="http://www.ebay.ca/itm/HERE-WE-GO-AGAIN-Press-Photo-LARRY-HAGMAN-Kim-Richards-DIANE-BAKER-Nita-Talbot-/370620610414#shId">Kim Richards played Hagman's character's adorable stepdaughter Jan</a>.

  • "Knots Landing" (1980-1982)

The CBS series that spun into the legendary "Dallas" followed Gary, the middle son and black sheep of the Dallas-based Ewing family. Hagman played his villainous older brother J.R. for the first few seasons of the series' 14 seasons before getting his own show.

  • "Dallas" (1978-1991)

Hagman continued to play greedy, scheming oil baron J.R., donning the most legendary cowboy hat in TV history for a whopping 14 seasons. The series' 1980 "Who shot J.R.?" storyline has gone down as the biggest cliffhanger in TV history ... but there was more J.R. to come.

  • "Nip/Tuck" (2006)

Hagman returned to TV with a four-episode stint in the fourth season of "Nip/Tuck." He played Burt Landau, a wealthy medical venture capitalist who bought the plastic surgery firm McNamara/Troy. Burt may have been even more twisted than J.R., as this sex scene with his much younger wife and Christian Troy, would indicate.

  • "Desperate Housewives" (2011)

In the seventh season of "Desperate Housewives," Hagman popped up as Lynette's mom Stella Wingfield's curmudgeonly, but loaded fourth husband.

  • "Dallas" (2012)

Fourteen seasons of "Dallas" wasn't enough. In 2012, the show successfully returned on TNT and Hagman was back as J.R., the ruthless former president of Ewing Oil. Though when the show made its debut, J.R. was in a nursing home, being treated for clinical depression, he returned to Southfork, hungry for power as Season 1 went on. The season ended with J.R. and his son John Ross gaining control of Southfork and joining forces against Bobby. <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/larry-hagman-death-dallas-prepping-393767">Season 2 of "Dallas" is currently in production and the show's writers are reportedly working on giving J.R. -- and Hagman -- a proper send-off</a>, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Earlier on HuffPost:

"; var coords = [-5, -72]; // display fb-bubble FloatingPrompt.embed(this, html, undefined, 'top', {fp_intersects:1, timeout_remove:2000,ignore_arrow: true, width:236, add_xy:coords, class_name: 'clear-overlay'}); });

The late Larry Hagman was best known for his role on "Dallas" -- and for wearing TV's most legendary cowboy hat -- but Hagman was all over the small screen long before the world wondered, "Who shot J.
