New Mexico has pumpkin boom despite drought

CORRALES, N.M. ?

Pumpkin patches across the country were ruined this year because of severe drought, but it's a total different story in New Mexico.

Roxanne Wagner owns Wagner's Farmland Experience. She said a pumpkin that runs $5 locally can cost double that in other parts of the country because of the crop shortage.

"We were blessed again with another abundant crop of pumpkins," Wagner said. "We are associated with a lot of friends with pumpkin patches across the country and I'm hearing they're having problems too. I would say we are doing pretty well."

Local families are glad the New Mexico pumpkin patches are doing so well.

"It's great for the simple fact that we don't have to go far and a lot of people can't do what we are doing, so it's awesome," parent Michael Childs said.

Last year was also a rough year for pumpkins. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, crops across the country were wiped out by flood, forcing prices up by 60 percent. ?
