Why carriers and customers are willing to pay for the iPhone 5

During Apple's Q1 2013 conference call, when asked about the mix of iPhone 5 compared to the lower priced iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 still on the market, Apple CEO Tim Cook responded that not much had changed from last year's iPhone 4S mix relative to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G, then the discount options.

When all was said, done, and factored, the average selling price (ASP) was essentially the same. Why would carriers keep paying Apple their premium rates to stock the iPhone 5, and why would people keep paying more to buy it, when the iPhone 4 is now a cheaper, free-on-contract option? Horace Dediu of Asymco did the math:

The clue comes from the fact that the consumer is not the only buyer. It?s operators who buy and re-price the product. They are hiring the product to sell broadband and the newest variant is still the best hire to do that job. This observation is crucial to understanding the growth dynamics of the iPhone and consequently, of Apple itself.

Carriers want to sell data services, we want to use data services, and the iPhone is still the best way to do that for everyone. This year, add LTE to the mix, and the iPhone 5 is the best iPhone.

Apple might one day find compelling business reason to explore less expensive iPhones for emerging, non-contract markets, but it looks like the top line is doing just fine.

Check out Dediu's full post for all the charts, and his exploration of how the iPhone business looks now that Apple is reporting is separately from accessory and services revenue.

Roope Tonteri take out the FIS Snowboard World Championships Big Air competition

Finnish rider Roope Tonteri put on yet another tremendous performance, this time walking away with the gold medal the International Skiing Federation (FIS) World Championships Big Air competition that went down in Quebec City, Canada, on Saturday, January 19.

Sweden?s Niklas Mattsson had to settle for second place, thus taking home the silver medal, whereas Belgium?s Seppe Smits clinched the bronze medal and therefore completed the winner?s podium.

A massive crowd was in attendance to witness some of the sport?s top athletes battle it out for the glory in conditions affected by heavy snow and wind. The challenge was indeed there, but the contenders for the coveted victory were more than capable of adjusting to the conditions and coming up with their best.

Through the course of the final, the crowd anticipated a triple to be landed by one of the daring riders. Even though there were plenty of 1080 and double cork in the books, a triple never came. It seemed that the athletes had opted for safer runs, while saving their flashier tricks for a better weather.

Pitted against 12 riders, Tonteri faced a daunting task of coming up with the highest-scoring trick of the day.

The Finnish rider, however, managed to come through after stomping a relative safe but massive Cab 1080 to seal the deal with a score of 188.5.

"I don't know what to say," Tonteri said. "I just tried to land my tricks like in the slopestyle. And this is what I got."

Mattsson, who had been a mere spectator at the snowboarding big air competition for the last couple of months due to injuries, landed a 1080 double cork and a front-side 1080 double cork to finish with a score of 177.75. The score proved sufficient to put him comfortably in second place.

"I'm super stoked to be on the podium," Mattson said. "I haven't done those tricks since I injured my right meniscus last September."

Smits, who is always a treat to watch at any snowboarding competition, landed a clean back-side 1080 double cork and a Cab 1260 to finish in third place with a score of 149.5.

The NRA's Ideas Are a Recycling Machine

While bucking one of the administration's few proposals on firearms that Republicans might actually accept, the National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre offered absolutely no new ideas ? indeed, old ideas ? during a speech that reveals the backwards thinking behind the gun lobby's future.

RELATED: Why This Time Was Different for Guns

In a speech late Tuesday at a Nevada hunting conference,?LaPierre attacked President Obama for a very subtle reference to gun control in his second inaugural address.?In fact, Obama's reference was so subtle that many gun-control advocates missed it ? "I was, personally, upset that Mr. Obama did not discuss gun control," The New York Times' Andrew Rosenthal wrote ??but LaPierre said that when Obama said, "We cannot mistake absolutism for principle," he was referring to gun advocates. Absolutism is okay when we're talking about the Second Amendment, LaPierre said. "Obama wants to turn the idea of absolutism into a dirty word," he said. The NRA executive vice president continued:

"I?ve got news for the president... Absolutes do exist. Words do have specific meaning in language and in law. It?s the basis of all civilization. Without those absolutes, without those protections, democracy decays into nothing more than two wolves and one lamb voting on, well, who to eat for lunch."

You know what that sounds a lot like? Barry Goldwater, who famously said in his 1964 presidential nomination acceptance speech, "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!"?Even though the NRA promised "meaningful contributions" after the Newtown shooting, all of its contributions are recycled slogans.

RELATED: Wayne LaPierre Only Said What Gun Nuts Have Been Posting on Facebook

The most quoted line from LaPierre's first press conference after the shooting ? "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" ? is so old that it had inspired Facebook memes long before the event. (Here's LaPierre saying it to USA Today in July 2010.?Here's a gun-rights advocate in South Dakota saying it in January 2008.?Here's LaPierre saying it in another article in USA Today?? this one from December 20, 2007?? after the Virginia Tech shooting.?"It has occurred to me that sitting next to a good guy with a gun is better than sitting next to abad guy with a gun," Don Galloway wrote in The New Hampshire Union Leader on July 30, 2004.)?Likewise, the NRA ad calling Obama a hypocrite for having Secret Service protection for his daughters but being "skeptical" of putting armed guards in elementary schools is another tired meme recycled on Facebook pages.

RELATED: The Executive Order the NRA Should Fear the Most

We should congratulate the NRA for recycling Barry Goldwater instead of its own talking points on Tuesday. Too bad the group doesn't really believe it. The NRA is in no way truly absolutist on the Bill of Rights; LaPierre called for a check on violence in video games?? which would put limits on the First Amendment. The NRA is on Team Wolf in that scenario.

RELATED: NRA Snubs Obama

LaPierre's speech served as an attack on the idea of universal background checks for gun purchases, one of the very few legislative ideas proposed by Obama that might have Republican support. Rep. Robert Goodlatte, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, said on C-SPAN, "[I]n terms of background checks, in terms of keeping weapons out of the hands of criminals and people who have serious mental health difficulties, we want to do that, and we would take a close look at that." About 40 percent of guns are currently sold without background checks. Republican support for changing that might be why the NRA has moved beyond quoting Facebook memes and onto cribbing from conservative classics.

Martin Luther King Day: How far is America along road to the 'dream'?

Problems that disproportionately beset black Americans ? poverty, broken families, prison time ? have barely nudged during the Obama administration. But Martin Luther King Day is also an occasion to recognize progress for the black community.

President Obama began his second presidential term on Monday by laying his hand upon two Bibles: One was used by Abraham Lincoln, the other belonged to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the ?traveling" Bible that the civil rights leader carried on marches.

Those two volumes are symbolic bookends to America?s past 150 years, especially when combined with Mr. Obama?s own achievement as the first African-American president of a former slave nation.?But if Lincoln helped America correct its course by emancipating the slaves, it?s Dr. King?s ?dream? of equal rights and a color-blind society that seems more fundamental today ? Martin Luther King Day ? as America's first black president begins another four years at the helm of the world?s most powerful republic.

To be sure, Obama has had to carry the burden of black America?s continuing problems, and his legacy may yet be tainted by the economic malaise that has idled nearly one-quarter of all able-bodied black workers ? an unemployment rate twice that of white America. Other problems that disproportionately beset the African-American community ? poverty, broken families, high incarceration rates ? have also barely nudged under Obama. And in some political quarters, racial tensions have ticked up under Obama.

Yet as Americans take stock of the moment, the change that has swept across the country in the four decades since the onset of the civil rights movement is stunning and a testament to an inherent American goodness that King recognized and reinforced in his speeches and marches.?

?We are far from achieving the perfection of Dr. King?s ?Dream? but that is no reason to ignore how far we have come,? writes Fox News contributor and Washington media veteran Juan Williams, who is black. ?Even now, as we see shifting demographics seeding racial tension in some precincts, the country is still moving forward. The United States is a good country. This nation still labors to achieve the vision of Dr. King and President Reagan ? the shining city on a hill.?

Ronald Reagan signed legislation establishing Martin Luther King Day as a federal holiday in 1983, a moment when many people came to recognize King as a pivotal and aspirational figure for all of America, not just as a leader of blacks who championed their civil rights. King, whose words in the inspiriational ?I have a dream? speech and the philosophical ?Letter from a Birmingham Jail? lifted up a nation, was assassinated in Memphis,Tenn., on April 4, 1968.

Since then, America?s black middle class has become larger and more influential, especially in places like Atlanta, King's home town. America?s black middle class is now ?the wealthiest, best-educated community of black people in the world,? writes Mr. Williams.

Yet, on this confluence of MLK Day and Obama?s inauguration, some Americans suggest that the president may be less the benefactor of King?s ?dream? and more its modern-day standard-bearer.

Large numbers of African-Americans attended Monday?s inauguration on the National Mall in Washington, and some said that young, low-income blacks, especially, relate to Obama because they see him defending opportunities and government help for those who are struggling.

Hushed App Takes On Burner By Bringing Disposable Phone Numbers To Over 40 Countries Worldwide

Hushed-appThe ability to create virtual, disposable phone numbers is paving the way for a new wave of startups, from those attacking the BYOD (bring-your-own-device) trend at work like SendHub, to apps like Burner for iOS, which offers the privacy of a temporary number without the need to buy an actual "burner" cell phone. Today, another new application called Hushed, somewhat along the lines of Burner, is making its debut on Android first. But this time, the startup is offering support for over 40 countries around the world.

EU Pundit : Issues of the European Union: Education: Teachers and ...

Visible Learning by John C. Hattie is shaking up the education world.

Donald C. Orlich in his review at Education News sums it up nicely:

"[T]wo conclusions may be inferred: (1) Teacher quality is a key link to student achievement and (2) Most current educational reform efforts have simply been ?fads.?

This book is a MUST reading for all involved in teacher education programs, those who determine educational policies and standards, and school evaluators."

We have been arguing for years for an evidence-based approach to education, learning, teaching, and the arts and sciences in general, and John Hattie's work is an exclamation point in this direction.

Hat tip to CZ/CK and a German-language Zeit Online article titled Ich bin superwichtig! by Martin Spiewak about the John Hattie evidence-based education study.
