Asia stock markets up as Dow logs strong January

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were mostly higher Friday as a weak jobs report from the U.S. was tempered by Wall Street's overall sterling performance for January.

Japan's Nikkei 225, meanwhile, was once again energized by the yen's continued descent against the dollar. The index rose 0.7 percent to 11,219.20.

On Thursday in the U.S., the government reported that weekly applications for unemployment benefits rose 38,000 to a seasonally adjusted 368,000. Investors had hoped to see better results since applications plummeted in the previous two weeks to five-year lows.

Still, investors buoyed by improvements in the U.S. housing and jobs markets and decent corporate earnings have been scooping up stocks.

Although the Dow Jones industrial average finished lower on Thursday, the index logged its best January since 1994 by finishing 5.8 percent higher for the month. The Standard & Poor's 500 finished the month 5 percent higher, its best start to the year since 1997.

"There is a general feeling in the US that markets are due for a breather, and after such a red-hot month any excuse to take profits looks likely," said Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne.

Updated data on manufacturing in China fell short of expectations. Industrial production is still growing, but at a slower pace, according to the government-sanctioned China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. It reported growth in January at 50.4 on a 100-point scale. While numbers above 50 indicate expansion, the pace slowed from December's 50.6.

"It's still above 50. It's a slight drawback, but I don't think anyone has paid much attention to it," said Andrew Sullivan of Kim Eng Securities in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.4 percent to 23,624.52. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.1 percent to 1,964.48. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.9 percent to 4,921.20. The ASX closed at 4,879 on Thursday, capping its best January since 1995, Lucas said.

Among individual stocks, South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plummeted 7.2 percent. Japanese phone company Softbank, which said Thursday its net profit more than doubled in the October-December quarter from a year earlier, jumped 5.7 percent.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 3 cents to $97.52 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 45 cents to close at $97.49 a barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, euro rose to $1.3627 from $1.3574 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 92.21 yen from 91.38 yen.

Illegal fireworks blamed for deadly blast in China

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese authorities say a truck that exploded and caused an elevated stretch of highway to collapse, killing 10 people, was loaded with holiday fireworks that were illegally produced and transported.

State media say local authorities have shut down the factory where the fireworks were produced and detained four company officials after Friday's blast.

It is unclear what set off the fireworks on its shipping route through the central province of Henan.

The Ministry of Public Security said Saturday that Hongsheng Fireworks Manufacturing Co. Ltd., based in neighboring Shaanxi province, illegally produced the explosives, improperly packaged them and contracted with a trucking company unlicensed to handle hazardous commodities.

Fireworks are a major part of the festivities surrounding the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 10 this year.

Ahmadinejad unveils Iran's newest fighter jet

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has unveiled the country's newest fighter jet, which officials claim can evade radar.

Ahmadinejad said at a Saturday ceremony broadcast on state TV that Qaher-313, or Dominant-313, showed Iran's will to "capture peaks."

Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi says Qaher is "fully indigenous," designed and built by Iranian aerospace experts.

Photos released by the official IRNA news agency shows Qaher as a single-seat jet, described as a fighter-bomber that can combat both other aircraft and ground targets.

Iran unveiled what it said was its first domestically manufactured fighter jet, called Azarakhsh or Lightning, in 2007. Saeqeh, or Thunder, was a follow up aircraft derived from Azarakhsh.

Tehran has repeatedly claimed advances in military technologies in recent years but its claims cannot be independently verified.

Mali jihadists in custody say tortured by military

TIMBUKTU, Mali (AP) ? Three suspected jihadists arrested in the days since they liberated the town of Timbuktu said Friday that Malian soldiers were torturing them with a method similar to waterboarding.

The three are being held in an earthen cell in what remains of the military camp in Timbuktu, which was liberated earlier this week by French and Malian soldiers after nearly 10 months under the rule of radical Islamists.

The men, who were tied together with a turban and one handcuff, all acknowledged to The Associated Press having been members of the al-Qaida-linked group known as Ansar Dine, or Defenders of the Faith.

"To force me to talk they poured 40 liters of water in my mouth and over my nostrils which made it so that I could not breathe anymore. For a moment I thought I was even going to die," said one of the men, who gave his name as Ali Guindo and said he was from a village near the central Malian town of Niono.

"I sleep in the cold and every night they come pour freezing water over me. "

All three prisoners described similar treatment. Their account could not be independently verified. Soldiers holding the three asked reporters to leave after initially allowing journalists to speak with them.

Army Col. Mamary Camara told reporters that the three were arrested by Malian forces in the town of Lere, and he said that one of the men was from Libya and was caught wearing a foreign military uniform.

The Libyan jihadist was visibly frightened, crouching in a corner of his cell. He gave the AP contradictory information about his background, first saying he was born in a Malian village but of Libyan descent.

Later, he said he was from Tripoli but has lived for years in Mali. He initially denied being part of Ansar Dine but later confirmed that he belonged to the movement though he denied having an important role.

The Malian military said that when he was arrested he was wearing a watch with a memory card inside that they said was used to communicate with other foreign jihadists.

The allegations of torture made public Friday in Timbuktu come as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International released reports Friday outlining other allegations of misconduct by the Malian military over the last month.

Amnesty International cited witnesses saying the Malian army had arrested more than 24 civilians on the eve of the French-led intervention on Jan. 11. Amnesty says it is feared that many were later killed by soldiers and some bodies were thrown down a well in Sevare. The Associated Press had earlier reported killings of civilians by the Malian army in Sevare, with bodies dumped in a well.

The Malian government has promised to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by its soldiers.

France has said that it eventually wants to hand over responsibility for the mission to the Malian army and other African counterparts.

Back to BlackBerry: one editor's 30-day trial run

BlackBerry 10 for 30 days

I confess, I'm intrigued by BlackBerry 10. Surprised? So am I. It's been easy to pre-emptively count BlackBerry out of the smartphone wars based on its performance over the last two or three years, but there's an element of mystique and personality that have made me quite curious to give the new OS a shot. While Wednesday's BB10 launch answered a lot of questions, it also raised a lot of new ones. Most of the mysteries revolve around its ecosystem, hardware quality, competitive advantages / disadvantages and if the platform can persuade Android and iOS users to switch. As a former Pearl and Curve owner, I want -- nay, need -- to determine for myself how well BlackBerry's latest effort holds up against its rivals. Thus, I have decided to use the BlackBerry Z10 as my sole device and daily driver for thirty days.

From now until March 3rd, I'll experience nearly every aspect of BB10: the UI and its learning curve, its performance and battery life, BlackBerry World, the highly praised virtual keyboard and how well it can handle my work load. I'll even use the phone at MWC, a major international trade show in which I'll be even more dependent on my mobile than usual. Throughout this process I'll be documenting my thoughts, feelings and emotions and deliver them in a regular series of weekly posts. By the end, we'll see whether or not BB10 can win my heart; is it a suitable replacement for the average iOS or Android user, or does the company still have a difficult path ahead of it? Time will tell, and I'm eager to find out.

Note: If you want to keep updated on my posts, be sure to use the "BradBerry" tag!

How You Can Improve Spam Filtering and Email Security for Your ...

E-mail spam filtering has become a necessity in today?s environment. Spam and spam filtering are real money making business for many companies. Spam filtering comes in different forms. It can be embedded in your antivirus software that scans e-mail as it reaches your Outlook. You can use a server based application like GFI that scans e-mail when it hits your mail server. Or you can use a hosted solution like MX Logic that scans all your e-mail before it even gets to your server. With all these options out there and with different pricing levels which is the best solution to go with? As an Engineer working with e-mail servers for about 15 years, I believe the hosted solution is the way to go.

So the real question is, what makes a Hosted Solution better than the other two options?

1) It keeps?spam and virus infected messages from ever getting to your server.

2) If your e-mail server goes down, then the hosted spam service will spool your mail until the server comes back online.

3) You access e-mail messages even when your server is offline (only with some anti-spam providers).

4) Outgoing e-mail can also be filtered.

One of the key features of a hosted solution is that the viruses and spam messages NEVER hit your server. You can?t get a virus on your system or click on a spam hyperlink, if the message never gets to the server. When you use AVG to scan Outlook for e-mail, then the e-mail message is already on your desktop. On top of that, the server doesn?t need to process these e-mail messages or run?scans which frees up system resources include processor, RAM and disk space that can be used for other business related process. Why bog down your server, when an external host can do that for you?

Since all of your e-mail routes through the hosted spam filter, if your e-mail server goes down or your company internet drops, the hosted spam provider can spool your e-mail. That means that they hold on to these messages, until your server comes back up. When the server is back online, all the e-mail that was sent to you during your outage is then sent to your mail server. Your clients and customers don?t receive those bounce messages stating that your server is unavailable, meaning that they don?t have to manually resend them. As an IT organization, how does it look if Time Warner has an outage in our area and all of our customers start receiving bounced messages? A host spam solution ensures that we always get our e-mail messages, even if our internet is offline for a few hours.

In addition to just holding on to your e-mail messages, if your server goes down, MX Logic goes to the next step. They offer you the ability to read and reply to e-mail using their web interface while your e-mail server is offline. You aren?t able to get these e-mail messages in Outlook until your server comes up, but if you have that time critical message that needs an immediate response, then waiting a few hours for the mail server to come online might not be an option. MX Logic gives you the tools to log onto their service, read and reply as quickly as you can type.

Many hosted solutions provide the option to not only scan incoming mail but to?scan outgoing messages as well. This feature does provide some added benefits to the people, who you communicate with, as they can be sure that mail from you is valid and virus free. However, it adds additional security for the outgoing messages, as properly configured Blacklisting services will keep you in the clear as your messages are sent through valid spam filtering organizations.

Spam and virus filtering of e-mail has become a critical service that every organization needs to leverage. For just a few dollars per user account, the benefits of a hosted spam solution greatly outweigh the risks of running filtering options on your workstation or server.

QUICKQUOTE: DRIVER RETIRES

Packers wide receiver Donald Driver has announced his retirement, ending a 14-year career as Green Bay's all-time leader in yards receiving and catches. Only quarterback Brett Favre has played more games in a Packers uniform.

In a team statement, Driver says: "I played my entire career in Green Bay and have always enjoyed a special bond with the fans. ... I can think of no better way to retire than to celebrate with them and the Packers organization."

Driver was slightly less formal on Twitter: "It's been an amazing journey, thank you for all of your love and support! (hash)Packer4Life"

Driver's key career statistics: 743 receptions, 10,137 yards, 61 touchdowns. He had seven seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards.

DON'T YOU HAVE SOMETHING BETTER TO DO?

Ray Lewis is retiring to spend more time with his family. Matt Birk is still playing, in part, because of his.

The Baltimore Ravens center is 36, and he and his wife have six kids. When Birk contemplated retiring after last season, his family was supportive, knowing they'd have him around a lot more.

Then they saw what that would be like.

"In the offseason, I'll be home for a month or two and they'll be like, 'Isn't it time for you to go back to work?'" Birk said. "I like to try to get involved, and they have a rhythm at home. When we have the re-entry period in the offseason, where I'm home a lot more, there's always a few bumps."

EXTRA MUSTARD?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick set an NFL record for yards rushing by a QB in a playoff game, gaining 181 against Green Bay on Jan. 12.

But don't forget ? the kid can throw, too.

Actually, he really zips the ball, showing off a right shoulder honed in part by his days as a baseball pitcher who threw 90 mph and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.

Maybe throws a football a little bit too hard on occasion.

"I talk to him about a little less mustard all the time. (There's) a lot of velocity on the ball," 49ers tight end Vernon Davis said. "Colin is always in the weight room. If you want to find Colin, go to the weight room."

CULLIVER REVERSAL

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is reversing course after saying he wouldn't welcome a gay teammate.

Culliver now says that's "not what's in my heart" and he was "just kidding around."

The cornerback apologized to the city of San Francisco for remarks he made earlier this week to comedian Artie Lange.
